So, I have this doors that take me to the balcony. I already made sure they are correctly closed but if I stand near it I can feel a rush of cold air through the sides. You can see here by moving 50 cm the floor gets 5 degrees colder. What can I do to prevent cold air from entering when the windows are closed?

  1. Needs to be adjusted by a professional.

If you are renting, get in touch with your land lord.

Keep in mind, it’s still a window, not a submarine hatch. Some air will always get through, and even a little air would have been very noticeable the last couple of days. A professional can tell you if the window is indeed badly fitted.

  2. Some doors also have a “summer” and “winter” setting that regulates how much air flows through them even when closed.

  3. Very often window seals are not serviced properly. You (or your landlord) should check the seals once a year and apply some “Gummipflegemittel”. Theses are substances coming as liquid, spray or gel and will insure the rubber stays soft and can maintain a seal.

  4. If you rent, this is something your landlord is supposed to organise after you have notified them. If you own the flat, you can ask a “Tischler” or anybody who installs doors and windows to do it. It is common to that windows and doors need to be adjusted every few years.

  5. Your doors/windows are fine. The flow of cold air you feel is the inside air cooling down at the window and thus falling to the bottom, as cold air is denser than warm air.

  6. do the paper test. Put a sheet of paper in the door and close it. If the door closes properly, you should not be able to pull out the paper again. If there is any point where the sheet of paper is removable, check the rubber sealing there.

  7. We complained to the landlord which is a rental company. They sent a guy to check the windows and he said the seals are worn out and the windows are too old and need replacement. He took all the measurements. We heard nothing. After calling a few times the landlord agreed to change the windows as he trusted the guy. He said they’ll replace the windows after a month. As of today, no news. We gotta keep calling the landlord to know the status.

  8. Some windows are planned to allow fresh air in the apartment, the air should escape through other windows or through ventilation system installed in your bathroom and or wc.

If you have heated floors, the grid should be denstier in front of the windows, so you don’t feel the cold air.
