I believe the last time this happened it resulted in the Black Plague killing a large number in Europe.

I read this just after feeding my cats. I live in a rural area, so apart from being well cared for pets, they serve a vital role in managing the rodent population.
In Ireland, unlike dogs and livestock, they don’t have a great deal of legal protection, other than the broader animal welfare legislation, such as the *Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013*.
So, if you accidentally knock down a dog you must report this to the owner or the Gardaí (police), whereas with a cat, you can just sling it over the ditch and be on your way. It’s not ideal, I’ve had cats killed by local dogs and can do nothing about it.

ITT people too stupid to recognise their empathy is selectively applied towards an animal that decimates wild bird, reptile and mammal populations – purely because they find them cute.
The rat lobby
I find a 5 year sentence rather short for the amount of killings (20+ animals). Unless they do a good therapy in between, i doubt that person will be healthy afterwards…
Good. They destroy our environment. They should be considered invasive and culled.
What the actual fuck
We can thank cats for protecting our crops early on. When humans started to settle and farm (food nicely available nearby, no need to spend all days gathering food), there was surplus that could be stored. The rodents came for the grain, the cats came for the rodents. Cats were not pets.
Still, large warehouses benefit from resident cats. In farmhouses they are essential, unless you want to use strong poisons – but cats are very efficient mousers.
Of course cats do not understand that people think certain furry creatures are cute and certain not, or that small winged creatures are out of bounds.
My senior cat hunts efficiently flies, which I approve. He yells longingly at birds that are out of his reach, he is an indoor cat. He also protects the smallest kid in the family, which we all approve.
**Article :** Over the years, there are some non related cases of mentally ill or drug addict people who kills cats in France and in Spain. They are being arrested and prosecuted. Without any link, Australia has a policy of eradicating stray cats.
