I’m visiting in late March and, being the type A person I am, am already looking at driving routes. I’m getting a car at Gardermoen and heading to just outside Beitostølen. All routes being roughly equal in time, what would you suggest for a good balance of scenery and avoiding the worst parts of late winter driving? I’m very used to hard winters and snowy roads, but not really in a mountainous area, so I’d love any input, thanks!

  1. The middle route passes Randsfjorden, a bit twisty and can be slippery, but can be pretty. Its more of a long lake than fjord. The western route is main road and with traffic and unfortunately Drammen, but Valdres is quite pretty in winter. The route via Gjøvik is safe and has good roads, but is a bit uninspiring.

  2. Both are fine. Just check Google traffic before starting to see if there are any hindrances on the way.

We do this trip a few times every year

  3. Check the driving conditions when you travel. There can still be snow storms and road closures in March.
