I saw a post about this a few weeks ago and spotted it walking home from work. The church is The Most Precious Blood on O’Meara street and if anyone has any info on this quirky design I’d love to hear about it!
It could be a design choice but would be great If it was one of those hundred year old laws like with st Paul’s and Richmond park.
Thanks!

Cos it looks rad
Looked into this before. It was a [design choice](https://www.architectsjournal.co.uk/news/eye-catching-lipton-plant-scheme-with-semicircular-cut-out-approved).
I believe the church complained that the new building would have hidden it to passers-by looking up O’Meara Street from Union Street (not sure how much casual passing trade they get) so this was the architect’s imaginative solution to highlight the Rose Window and increase the church’s ‘kerb appeal’.
I saw them building this every day for months, as my train into work goes across the bridge you can see behind the church! I also wondered why the building had this curve in it; it seemed to be giving them some trouble to build.
This is a really fun and beautiful design. Cities need more of this playfulness
new but sympathetic to the old – i think it looks great!
Sunlight?
Don’t have an answer to the question but I’ve worked on this church a few times and it’s an absolute architectural gem on the inside. Such an unassuming building tucked away but well worth a look inside if you’re passing.
Ha that’s my old uni
I think they did it because it is a fucking great idea.
Up with this sort of thing.
