Imagine the opportunity to found a brand new settlement and deciding to call it “West Town”.

  1. West Town.

At least it doesn’t look like they’ve spunked a fortune on coming up with a name…

  2. The Airport is going to be swallowed up by the city. Will soon be a continuous urban sprawl through to the other side of Uphall/Livinston.

I remember when Edinburgh ended at the old Maybury roundabout 🙂 ( before the bypass ).

Edinburgh is growing and getting squeezed East and West due to the Pentlands and the Forth,

  3. Just what the Central Belt needs another 7,000 ticky tacky box houses barely a wingspan apart.

I was talking to someone recently about one of the sprawling developments outside South Queensferry you can see from the train. He was asked to provide top soil to a house after the owners tried to plant some bushes in their garden only to discover there was only an inch or so of soul under their lawn.

They said the first thing the developers did was dig up all the top soil, sell it, then when near completion, put turf on top of all the rough rocky crap they’d disturbed during construction.

    Maybe this will be different…

  4. I notice the artist’s impression is missing planes screaming to and from the airport every minute.

  5. It looks soviet in design.

Carless is great but hopefully there’s parking. Public transport adds extra time to a commute I’d rather not have and a car is really handy for getting disabled people back and forth to the doorstep of wherever they need to be.

  6. The artists impression seems to be missing parking, roads, street lighting and just about everything except Lego blocks and trees

  7. What is wrong with you people. You are never happy. I for one welcome this development and look forward to visiting West World and fighting their robot cowboys.

  8. I’m convinced that this sub is the manifestation of a 63 year old man drinking bells at the bar of a manky pub in the Gorbals at 3pm.

Moans about the various crises we have, and moans when anything is done about it.

  9. Come to West Toon and watch the planes go vroom vroom.

  10. I know this will be pretty low on the issues arising but won’t this utterly ruin the trams? 7000 homes and the maybury build, won’t it be impossible to fit people by the time it hits the gyle?

  11. Yeah cause they need more houses in that area………. I know let’s add more to the thousands already being built there and still do nothing about the transport infrastructure 🤦

  12. Looks hideous.

We should revert to the monumental megastructure school of building and rather than build another souless town of bland newbuilds, build one massive and ludicrous spire.

Or a giant hollow statue, or a giant head, or a complex bunker system, or a ziggurat.

  13. This will be a great idea until the naming rights are sold to a company….

  14. As a half scot half serb please dont let this turn into the “Belgrade Waterfront of Scotland”. In other words, please dont make this a massive money-laundering scheme built by shady contractors from the middle east

  15. I hope we have learned our lessons from Cumbernauld and the other new towns.

  16. >A £2bn development with 7,000 homes as well as shops, schools, social and medical facilities is being planned for a site near Edinburgh Airport

Not really understanding the opposition. We desperately need more houses, and this seems like a well-rounded proposal with many new homes _and_ the infrastructure to support it. Plus lots of walking and cycling routes.

Also, keep in mind the image shown in the article is a massing image, it’s not how the homes will actually look like, that’s why it’s all gray. [This](https://west-town-edinburgh.com/news/) website shows some renders of what the actual homes will look like.

  17. Wait till the residents start complaining about aircraft noise.

  18. I bet they’ll complain about airplanes noise the week they move in

  19. old town, new town, the meadow, the shore, the highlands, the borders… etc etc
