  1. Maybe he should have just testified when he had the chance during the trial.

  2. ***From Rolling Stone’s Nikki McCann Ramirez and Asawin Suebsaeng:***

Closing arguments in New York’s civil fraud trial against Donald Trump took place on Thursday without an in-court word from the former president — who spent days rehearsing what he thought would be a blistering, dramatic conclusion to the case that will determine the fate of his business empire.

On Wednesday, the theatrical plan by Trump and his attorneys to have the former president personally deliver his own closing statement fell apart after Trump’s legal team, led by Chris Kise, refused to agree to conditions that would restrict him from going off-topic or attacking individuals involved in the trial.

Trump had been preparing for an opportunity to rant in court.

  3. I don’t care. He was given limits to the topic of the trial and refused to answer the requirement. Suck it.

  4. Reminder that he wasn’t denied. He refused to agree to follow the rules required to give the closing statement, he could have agreed to follow them but made the decision not to.

  5. He’s doing it now, apparently, without permission and against recommendations from his lawyers.

I hope he increases the rate by ten times.

  6. He didn’t get denied. He was approved so long as he followed the closing argument rules that all defense attorneys are required to follow. Trump refused to agree to the rules before a deadline.

  7. The judge actually did graciously give him a few minutes and he still fucked it up.

  8. We’ll just get the Cliff Notes version when he does his dumb talk outside the courtroom to the press. The lunch break talk tells me it didn’t go so well for him this morning.

  9. He’s speaking anyway, there are no camera present though. I just hate that every news organization is tripping over themselves to find out what he’s saying, but we all already know: witch hunt, political persecution, stolen election, etc etc. Stop giving this orange hemorrhoid air time.

  10. I love that Chris Kise doesn’t bother to capitalize names in his emails to the judge. Is he doing it from his phone and can’t be bothered? lol.

  11. Donald Trump looks like a dog that just pooped on the rug. He’s clearly tired of winning.

  12. The Judge let him talk and he’s currently attacking everyone in the room.

  13. “I know a lot about crime, believe me. A lot of people are saying I know more about crime than anyone in history. They’re saying I do the biggliest crimes and the best crimes. People are always coming up to me and asking me, Mr. Trump, sir, how do you do it? How are you so crimey? We’ve never seen anything like it before.”

And that’s when his lawyers would have cut him off.

  14. Apparently they’re letting him give his full rant anyway. What good is denying it on paper if they just let him do it in real life anyway

  15. He didn’t get denied! His lawyers didn’t respond and agree to the judges conditions. Big BIG difference. Stop making Trump a martyr for shooting himself in the foot.

  16. but he did anyway. Because. Trump.

“Engoron asked Trump if he will promise to just comment on the facts in the case.

“Trump (at the defense table) doesn’t say no. He just launches into a 5 minute monologue, until the Judge cut him off. And he broke all the preconditions set by the judge.

  17. He isn’t arguing he’s innocent he’s arguing he is above the law.

  18. He didn’t get denied. He refused to adhere to the judge’s terms.

  19. He didn’t get denied or banned! He was told her would have to officially agree not to turn his closing arguments into a campaign speech and he wouldn’t agree to it. The media is giving credence to his victim complex by creating headlines worded in his favor even though that was not the case!

  20. When counsel doesn’t use capital letters you know you got a goodun.

  21. Am a lawyer. If my client tried to make a closing argument, I would kick him in the nuts.

  22. He wasn’t “denied” a closing argument. Trump refused to adhere to the regulations stipulated by the court regarding closing arguments; to make sure that he wasn’t going to make a campaign speech or discuss matters that aren’t relevant to the case like blaming transgender people or woke DAs for his legal issues. Because he refused to accept those conditions, the Judge wouldn’t allow him to make a closing argument.

  23. He was denied after he couldn’t agree to the terms the judge gave. The same terms given to any one that wanted to present during the closing is my understanding. So no campaign speech, no evidence that wasn’t presented at trial all ready. No wild claims. Tump would not agree, the judge said he couldn’t talk at closing then.

  24. The court let his speak— and he did his bullshit and the Judge should have immediately held him in contempt and hauled him off to jail.

  25. He wasn’t denied, he refused to refrain from any personal attacks on the AG in his closing argument

  26. He didn’t get “denied”. He was allowed to make a closing argument as long as he stayed within the boundaries of the rules the judge set for the trial, and he declined to do so.

  27. No, he rehearsed a campaign speech that he knew was disrespectful.

  28. I think the judge should have told him to be quiet when he started to rant and had him thrown out of the courtroom or in jail if he didn’t.
I’m still waiting for one of these judges to have balls enough to control their own courtroom!

  29. Apparently the judge let him speak for about seven minutes and finally told Trump’s lawyer that he has to control his client and that was that

  30. Trump’s attorney could quite possibly be as stupid as he is.

  31. His lawyer should be admonished for this. They were explicitly told he was not permitted to give a closing argument.

  32. Should have held him in contempt and if he didn`t shut his yapper, have him arrested.

  33. The judge’s earlier denial doesn’t mean a damn thing, unfortunately, as he let Trump make his statement anyway [Ny Times reported](https://www.nytimes.com/live/2024/01/11/nyregion/trump-fraud-trial?campaign_id=190&emc=edit_ufn_20240111&instance_id=112280&nl=from-the-times&regi_id=151016935&segment_id=154913&te=1&user_id=4574c52b4d9c785ae5403bf6aaea464e):

    >”Mr. Trump’s lawyers had initially put forward his plan to speak in his own defense last week, but the judge imposed limits on his remarks. Justice Engoron ruled that the former president could not deliver “a campaign speech” or attack the judge, his staff or Ms. James. Mr. Trump’s legal team objected, apparently scuttling his plan to speak, until one of his lawyers renewed the request at the end of the defense’s closing arguments on Thursday and the judge permitted it.”

This dude somehow *always* gets his way. He went on to attack the judge and Ms. James in his rambling today:

    >”Mr. Trump’s remarks were chaotic and emotional and lasted only minutes, during which he impugned the attorney general, Letitia James, a Democrat, saying she “hates Trump and uses Trump to get elected.”

    >He also took aim at the judge, Arthur F. Engoron, remarking, “You have your own agenda, I certainly understand that.” He added, as the judge stared stonily at him, “You can’t listen for more than one minute.”

    >Justice Engoron instructed the former president’s lawyer to “control your client.” But Mr. Trump continued until the lunch break, at which point he stopped as suddenly as he had started.”

Faced zero consequences for breaking the court order. So incredibly frustrating.

  34. He was not denied.

He refused to follow the rules that apply to everyone else in such a situation.

  35. So do people not see what he is doing?

He was denied a closing argument because he refused to agree to the rules that everyone has to agree to perform one.

    He wanted to get denied.

Because that means this exact headline gets posted everywhere and he can go on rants about this being a witch hunt.

He knows be can’t win in a court of law so he’s trying to win in the court of public opinion by making it look like he’s being treated unfairly. He is trying to weaponize his base.
