If anyone ever wondered what casual racism in Australia is like read this thread.
Not great obviously but you see the same stuff here and in r/europe. The worrying thing is how the entire Developed World has the same housing issue, no one seems to know how to resolve it
Literally applied for my visa but after reading the comments I’m having second thoughts. No point in going somewhere you are not welcome
We’re shifty with stupid accents apparently. I went over there for close to a month for work many years ago and was glad for the experience. It made me wonder why so many fellow Irish move there. The overt racism was staggering to experience.
“Bar their stupid accent”
Ouch 🙁
As someone out here the last while I fully see both sides to the comments there.
Sydney is very much so in a similar boat to Dublin rent wise. We’ve absolutely taken over places like Coogee and Bondi. We tend to stick to ourselves like most migrants do IMO and like any influx of people we’re absolutely driving rental demand out here.
We also brought a lot of the issues we have at home in regard to binge drinking and the behaviour that can follow on nights out.
That being said we are very sought after work wise. We’re absolutely driving their construction, and health sectors and we’re starting to boost their education sector big time.
The comments on the post itself are pretty dramatic, but similarly the reaction is too in regard to perceived racism. Like a lot of the shit they say about us is absolutely true. That being said I’ve been received very well by any Australians I’ve chatted to, they’re very friendly and actually interested in chatting to the Irish, I think because we tend to stick to ourselves so much. Bar the bit of mild ‘racism’ you’d experience out here it’s grand really.
I spent 10 years in Aus before moving to NZ. The casual racism is all over the place, against all (including Irish).
It gets tiresome at times however I’ve never found it abusive or aggressive & would never put me off recommending Aus to others,
I got far more abuse in Ireland for not voting FFFG. Which is worse – casual racism or vitriolic abuse for not agreeing with others political views? Neither is ideal but I would say get your visa while you can, nothing much encouraging for many to stay in Ireland for.
It was also posted on the much bigger sub /austraila. The comments are much more positive, not sure why.
I’m an Irish person living in Australia for 6 years.
The Australians, for the first time in their modern history, are experiencing an economic crisis. The problem is, this crisis is not unique to Australia and is, in fact, across all modern cities globally – housing.
As is the case in Ireland, the average (median as they use here) worker cannot afford property in any of the 4 major cities in the country and a majority of the property is owned by intergenerational families or offshore investors (primarily Chinese – my landlord lives in Hong Kong, for example).
21,000 immigrants in the greater scheme of things is actually not that high. Chinese get about 100,000 a year and India around 60,000 a year. Both countries have a population in excess of 1billion (proportionality could be argued).
As someone above pointed out, this was posted on a much larger sub reddit in Australia and received a very different response. However, the sentiment here in Ireland is not wrong.
Australians are racist. They are. You’re lying if you think otherwise. Are Irish better treated than others? You bet they are. Are Irish valued – genuinely – in Australia? Yes they are.
I believe I read a comment recently about someone saying “but then you’d need to live with Australians” or “never met a decent Australian” on this sub reddit. Don’t expect it to be well received on the other side if that’s the attitude here. I haven’t lived in Ireland, as mentioned, in many years but here there aren’t violent incidents occurring all over this island with regards to immigrants and asylum seekers? At least Australians aren’t stabbling indians, Lebanese and, above all, aboriginals on the street.
It’s also important to take this figure in context. Each year Australia takes in, and requires, about 500,000 immigrants on limited term visas from all over the world. My understanding – and please correct me if I’m wrong – is that Ireland in 2022 had a net migration figure of close to 0. This would suggest that many of the Irish going overseas are returning at the same rate they are leaving.
Grass may not always be greener and that is coming from someone who has a dual passport as of 2023.
Not that much. Considering..
What is going on in that thread
Never heard the Aussies called a great bunch of lads, for good reason. So inhumane to their indigenous and Asian migrants.
As an Irishman who has lived in Sydney for 15+ years now, I think the hostility towards Irish is being overemphasized by other commentators here. Either that, or it’s just a country/ rural thing.
Irish people don’t get the gushing “Omg, I’m Irish too!!” welcomes here that they might in America, but I’ve never experienced any sort of negativity for being Irish.
Most Aussies are just indifferent/ apathetic towards the Irish here. Probably the same way most people in Ireland are towards Aussies living there.
Most of my “year” is gone.
All graduated and left within a few months to a year
They all seem to be having fun. Most seem to stick to their friend groups at home and not mingle so much with the Aussies. Thus I’ve heard the Aussies don’t try either cause they know they’ll probably leave in a year.
Its looks class there can’t blame anyone. Summer holidays in Bali instead of the Iberian peninsula anyone
Wow! If that’s forum is representative of much, I’ll probably give Australia a skip as a holiday – yikes.
