Why Germany is a blank spot on Google’s Street View?

  1. Because people here are notoriously stubborn and fear someone will rob their stuff if they know how their house looks like, so they basically got google to withdraw from street view entirely. Privacy and stuff….

  2. Because barely anything of worth has been lost – but we dodged having a global and one of the most powerful super corporations of the earth having filmed and distributed our every street, alley, dead end and what not.

  3. OP, we get that answer at least once a month. Please use the search function

Tdlr (and very simplified): data protection (people having the option to legally force their house to be blurred out) met capitalism (google decided with all the people requesting blurring, it was not worth the expense and effort)

  4. My street (in Germany) is on street view. Except my house. Guess why 🤣🍷

Seriously I wasn’t really concerned about them showing my house, but I was curious to see if they really blur the house if I object (I am renting an apartment in the house, I am not the owner).

It worked, now I live in a blurry house. Sometimes it sucks because it makes inserting the front door key more difficult.

And I know this Reddit, but you can safely ignore any one-line answers. It’s a *lot* more complicated than the usual Reddit-karma-farming comments like “Datenschutz”, “Neuland” etc etc.

  7. I recently watched the German show “The Billion Dollar Code”, not sure if this is remotely related to that lawsuit against Google (i never heard of it before this show, not in the news or anywhere)? The series is quite good though.

  8. Germans are abnormally afraid of both technology and data privacy violations, and litigious enough to actually sue about it. After enough lawsuits, Google said “Fuck you then” and pulled out.

They still have the data, they just haven’t published it. In my view, that’s a huge loss.

  9. Try also to do a trivial thing like checking a status if your driving license online on Germany.

  10. I have yet to hear which privacy laws are actually relevant here. Especially as Google (and Apple) still regularly sends their cars around to film everything. They still use all of the data (mostly, but not exclusively to update their maps). In other words, they still profit massively, otherwise they wouldn’t do it, while the only advantage for the citizens whose data is used, Google street view, is not available.

  11. In Germany people are for “privacy”, but brought to the extreme. Their burocracy and personal data is many times in paper because of it. Like the vaccination data. It’s honestly ridiculous lol

  12. I’m a german and I can confirm that we are very scared of technology and data privacy violations.

My village people and I are happy that no one can see us on gogl meps.

We don’t have high speed internet either, but we don’t need it either. Take back your interweb and leave us alone gogle meps.We are germans and we didn’t ned the itnerweb 20 years ago and don’t ned the interweb now. My village people and I want to go back to 1950

  13. I‘m German and I object on everyone who says Germans are afraid of technology and this is the reason, we are not scared of Street Maps but valued privacy at the time google tried to implement it in Germany. Austria might still value privacy, tho, idk.

  14. Things Germans are afraid of:

    – People taking photos of their homes

    – Nuclear power

Feel free to expand the list

  15. I’ve seen a lot of mapping cars driving around Munich in the last few months. The street view for my street is 12 years old and is much different than what’s there today.

  16. Too scared of showing their street on the internet but not worried at all of being naked in public places lol
