Nobody drives in London, there’s too much traffic.
I think one thing to bear in mind is just how populous London is. Nearly 9 million people. Ireland as a whole – never mind just Dublin – has 5 million. Dublin doesn’t even have a million people. It’s too many people and it’s not designed to get around by car.
I rode my motorbike in London once. It was the most stressful hour of my life
Lima and Bengaluru the only ones with larger than London populations. Though considering London it’s not a surprise, be more interesting to then compare journey times using public transport.
Who else does the walking game in London? Pick an easily recognizable couple of cars, I usually choose a lorry with a big tradename or a purple SUV thing and then see how much ahead I can get by walking and how long it takes for the lorry or car to pass me. Many times I get to where I’m going before they ever catch up.
And the flip – when you’re in a bus and watch the easily recognizable pedestrian catching up and passing you over and over again.
Bucharest traffic is crazy. I’d take London any day of the week lol
I can definitely see it being not good, but is it bad?
Growing up on the outskirts of London, driving around is absolutely fine, but travel within Central London by car isn’t desirable not just because of traffic, but because it’s so easy to get around by public transport. I’d never consider driving within the A406 for example
Having seen how people drive in Milan and Lima, I’m not surprised that people spend less time waiting…
How is Bangkok not on this list? Can take over an hour to travel 10km between 8-10am and 4-7pm.
No US cities on there makes me skeptical about the data. Does TomTom not operate in US?
This is why London having over 1000 rail stations is a necessity
Wooo we’re number 1 yeah take that
Which part of London is the city centre?
I am astounded by the amount of people who still choose to drive in London – whether i lived there or was just visiting, in both scenarios i would always 100% use the public transport available. It could be better yes but the pros outweigh the cons for commuting in my opinion
What these results really show is that the methodology is flawed and the list isn’t complete. London does really badly for the city centre metric because London doesn’t have any inner-city motorways/dual carriageways to bump up the average. It does fine on the ‘metro area’ instead of ‘inner city’ measure.
Also, the number of cities with notoriously bad traffic that are missing makes the results pretty meaningless.
Remember, if you are stuck in traffic, you are traffic!
Did you know: Dublin’s traffic time has been exponentially increasing the past few years. It’s always Dublin
I would’ve thought Jakarta would be on there
Average time per 10km is a wild metric to choose… what’s wrong with Avg. KPH / MPH?
I sometimes take the 702 bus from Victoria back to my parents’ house in Slough, because it’s almost door to door for me in comparison with the train. On more than one occasion it has taken 40 minutes to go 5km from Victoria, through Hyde Park Corner, and up the A4.
My dad is 65 years old and does parkrun faster than that.
I refuse to believe Los Angeles isn’t on this list.
Okay, so it’s looking at Hyde Park to Bethnal Green, and Peckham to Kentish Town. Most of that’s 20mph/32kmph limit, so the quickest you could do 10km legally in a straight line, with no junctions, lights or similar is about 20 minutes.
Doesn’t even hit the Westway, so nothing to bring the average speed up.
This is my surprised face.
I literally cannot believe LA isn’t top of this list.
