A tale in 2 pictures

  1. Is the tale that Black is just there to make a dog’s breakfast of things and Cherry is trying to make improvements?

Are you expecting the SNP MPs to sit in the huff?

  2. Well, certainly not something that Mhairi can be accused of and to be honest surprised she would know given her participation record. Not that I have any time at all for Cherry.

  3. How terrible of an elected politician to participate in Committees and fulfil their role as a parliamentarian???

Regardless of your view on the ideological positions of these two, unless you take an abstentionist view that SNP members should take the Sinn Fein approach of non accepting Westminster authority at all then I fail to see why it is preferable for politician not to actively participate and engage in the parliamentary process.

  4. Has her fan base not been ripping into Wishart for being too comfortable in WM?

  5. I think it’s a waste of money paying these people to go to parliament just to whistle…

  6. They’ve gotten too comfortable ACTUALLY doing the job the taxpayer pays them £86k to do?! The nerve!

  7. To the sad cunt who abused Reddit’s suicide prevention system: I’m fine thanks, but trans people are going to suffer even more thanks to this appointment.

In the space of a decade, hate crimes against LGBT people in Scotland have more than doubled. And Cherry is complicit in spreading the Section-28-like rhetoric that leads to these hate crimes.

If it isn’t clear to you by now:

Transphobic culture wars are being used as a wedge issue to try and fracture the Scottish Independence movement. Section 35 and this appointment are just the beginning. And Cherry is more than happy to be an asset in that regard. No doubt it pays well.

And some bigoted morons will fall for it, will cheer for the UK Government overriding bills with cross-party support so long as it hurts the people they’ve been conditioned to hate.

Trans people will suffer, and so will Scottish democracy. These things shouldn’t be linked, but the UK Government – with help from Cherry – have ensured that these issues are entwined.

The SNP have a lot to answer for. Their disciplinary processes are so bad as to be considered non-existent.

**This** is why queer people and allies were warning the SNP to nip the Cherry situation in the bud, way back when she first started pushing anti-trans rhetoric. We always knew it would lead to something like this.

And now the UK is primed to start pushing US-style [anti-trans laws](https://translegislation.com/). They will start by amending the Equality Act. It will end with trans people – and cis people who don’t look cis – being being attacked and murdered.

  8. Oh God I cannot believe I’m about to defend Joanna Cherry of all people, but is the OP really taking issue with an MP fulfilling a duty they were elected to fulfil?

Would they rather all MPs do what Mhairi did? IE fuck all except make the odd speech when the SNP needed some publicity?

  9. I’ll be honest when I seen that comment from Mhairi Black, the first person that came to mind was Cherry

  10. I mean I can’t stand Cherry but she’s sort of… doing her job?

  11. Because some people seem confused about what I mean here:

    Mhairi Black is spot on.

She’s not complaining about SNP MPs who engage constructively with Parliamentary processes – John Nicholson is a great example of someone who holds Westminister to account by engaging in them.

She’s talking about SNP MPs who are clearly embedded in the Westminister culture and ecosystem, up to and including supporting and being supported by anti-trans groups who are funded by 55 Tufton Street, The Herirage Foundation and the like.

Do any of you really think this is *a good faith appointment* by Westminster? Or do you think Cherry has been getting chummy with her fellow bigots in positions of power behind the scenes?

She’s going to allow her fascist anti-trans friends backdoor access to influencing legislation.

This is why Mhairi Black’s speech on [the F Word](https://m.youtube.com/results?sp=mAEA&search_query=mhairi+black+the+f+word) is still so relevant.

  12. Getting appointing at a committee means that she has an important role to play, getting fucking tired of this petty “comfy slippers” bullshit just because people disagree with someone and I don’t care who it is!

  13. Human rights chair who’s entire mission is to take human rights from trans people.

  14. I don’t think this post makes the point you wanted to make.
Disagreeing with somebody using their available resources to make their views more forcefully (no matter how abhorrent Cherry’s views are) isn’t the ‘phoning it in and taking the salary’ that being too comfortable implies.

  15. The original post is sufficiently made and obvious to anyone not wanting to automatically engage in disagreement.

  16. Isn’t this chair of a human rights committee? Who thinks “yeah I could try do good in the world or I could stay in Scotland to keep people on the internet happy”

  17. Come on with the own goals and self-inflicted demise! I’m fucking here for it.

  18. I worked in Parliament for 3 years as a poorly paid MPs staff. It’s intoxicating AF. I can’t imagine how much more it would be if you were on £80k and have some power
