The democrats should just give the republicans whatever they ask for on border security. Left or right, you have to agree that the boarder is a mess. Democrats, and myself, don’t believe anything they are asking for would actually do anything. Fine, agree and get the funding for Ukraine. In 4 years when the boarder is still a mess and the republicans tried their shit, then you can say told you so.
We should assume the US turns isolationist and will become less influential in the coming period. We have to be able to defend Europe on our own. That is what one should immediately start to prepare for.
On the other hand, while doing that, let‘s keep a cool head and work for an agreement (well, in the end it is up to the congress), Russian propaganda is having a feast on this and the in general gloomy sentiments of many „Westeners“ right now who are not okay with a straight out war of aggression in Europe. Frankly, anywhere. Taiwan comes to mind.
Meanwhile GOP members like Ron Johnson can’t help themselves but to openly brag about how they’re working to slow negotiations. The same Ron Johnson who’s stated Ukraine must end the war via “negotiated settlement.” The same Ron Johnson who once spent a 4th of July in Moscow.
It’s not about securing the border. They enjoy having the border to bitch about going into elections. It’s about appeasing Trump by extending these negotiations as long as possible and hurting Ukraine in the process. Trump is indebted to Putin. MAGA is ruled by Trump. Mind you it was a month or so ago that Mike Johnson was meeting with Trump personally, and he and other House GOP “leaders” have all endorsed Trump for a second term since then. They can say they support Ukraine, but their actions speak louder than their words.
