Great article this, and very sensible, especially for the climate change people and their food miles.
We all need to eat local is what they’re saying, I already do as my butcher uses locally reared meat, he’d tell you all his meat comes from a 30 mile radius of his shop.
Hmmm… looks like the last of the rotting winter cabbages and turnips till April then 🙁
But why is imported bad? Yes I get the air miles/carbon footprint. However if I import fruit or veg from say Kenya then the Kenyan economy is benefitting. Their economy growing will lead to national development which ultimately benefit the planet as a whole too. Genuinely wondering!
Animal farmers and meat reatilers urge people to buy more animal products. I am shocked.
It’s a fair point. They aren’t wrong that lots of trendy vegan recipes call for foods grown in environmentally destructive conditions and then transported at environmental cost too.
That’s not a reason to resume eating meat though. It’s a reason to buy a chart of what’s in season.
You seem to have a set viewpoint and argue in bad faith. It is still better for the planet to import fruit/veg than to eat meat as it even with food miles, it will leave less of a carbon footprint than all of the years/recourses/gas pollution to raise the meat.
There are also examples of fruit and veg that are destructive to grow, like avocados, or palm oil. But essentially whether you shop local or not, it is still better for the planet if you are vegan, regardless of whether or not you shop locally.
Apart from this, you seem to think that vegans HAVE to grow their own food. Well no you’re under a massive misconception there and grasping at straws. Some of the extreme end do i’m sure. Likewise some ethical meat eaters raise and slaughter their own animals, Does that mean every responsible meat eater should raise and slaughter their own animals? No, obviously not.
