  1. This song, sung from the point of view of a Northern Lapwing bird whose chicks have been stolen, is *devastating*. Just fucking devastating. And with current events and the theft of Ukrainian children…………..

There is a folk legend that “Oh, Sorrow to the Lapwing” was the favorite song of Ivan Mazepa – and it is still performed at historical events and tributes to this pivotal figure in Ukrainian history. We wrote about Mazepa a bit in [this sunrise post](https://www.reddit.com/r/ukraine/comments/twlhe4/626_eet_the_sun_is_rising_on_the_41st_day_of_the/), but he deserves a larger effort at some point.

This version of this song was recorded by Nina Matviienko, who we wrote about [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/ukraine/comments/174akk3/712_eest_the_sun_is_rising_over_kyiv_on_the_594th/). She is accompanied by the famous boys choir called “Dudaryk”. The vocal arrangement was done by Mykola Leontovych, who we wrote about [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/ukraine/comments/xelz43/633_eest_the_sun_is_rising_on_the_204th_day_of/). There is another very beautiful version of the song that I recently found on YouTube that you can find [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3zr8rvnGho).
