Lords vote to delay Rwanda treaty in another setback for Sunak

My lords there have voted contents 214 not contents 171 so the contents have it my lords the section 20 motion I have tabled is unusual in fact un precedented we are not saying that the treaty should never be ratified but we are saying that Parliament should have the opportunity to scrutinize the treaty

And its implementing measures in full before it makes a judgment about whether Rwanda is safe and as the government proposes in its bill that the courts will be precluded from considering whether the Supreme Court’s concerns have been addressed it is now for Parliament alone to make that

Assessment it is the unanimous view of the International agreements committee that we need first to see the protections fully implemented and working and for that reason the committee concluded in its report that the treaty should not be ratified until the protections it provides have been fully implemented my lords I beg to [Applause]

Move

The House of Lords has voted in favour of a motion to delay ratification of the new Rwanda treaty until the government can show the country is safe.

It’s the first parliamentary defeat for Rishi Sunak’s plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda and puts the prime minister on the back foot again. Under the terms of the Safety of Rwanda bill, the law will not come into force until the treaty is ratified. The bill was passed by the Commons last week but came after a Tory row that damaged the prime minister’s authority.

  1. THAT IS GREAT NEWS BECAUSE IF "SUNAK" CARRIES ON WITH THIS REDICULOUS PLAN THEN HE SHOULD BE ARRESTED FOR BREAKING THE RULING OF THE HIGHEST COURT IN THE LAND

  2. Nobody in charge in the UK either elected or otherwise wants to allow our borders to be secured. We're being replaced and they're all complicit.

  3. Well done to the House of Lords For delaying this inhuman Rwanda legislation that rishi is trying to force through even tho it will break international laws

  4. Well that`s done boys all back to the bar I heard we have lots of new bubbly just in. another exhausting nigh at the Lords

  5. With all its faults the HOL must hold the Government to account , All the Consocialist who voted against their Conscience did so to keep on the Pay Roll.

  6. These unelected buffoons need to be disbanded, the government will go ahead with the legislation anyway, even though it will stop nothing!!

  7. The "smiling assassin" Sunak will soon be clearing off the the USA,to see how the university he and his wife gave 3m to,is getting on

  8. Would I be correct in saying HOL is advisory and can't actually block anything. I'm sure the Government can ignore the HOL and do what it wants but it's normally not done.

  9. I'm bored with this. As so much taxpayers money has been spent or wasted on this project why not let poor UK Citizens get on the planes to Rwanda ? I've had a look at the place and it's not bad. They have a Gorrila sanctuary and plenty of other things to enjoy. Save people from high rents, rediculous energy bills and give the illegal immigrants British passports so they don't qualify for free housing, free, gas/electricity, NHS etc That would be a bigger detterent than Rwanda.

  10. Brexit was all about ‘unelected bureaucrats’ running the show…..and yet Johnson stuffed the HoL with Establishment cronies and gave the hapless halfwit Lord Frost a key Brexit role…….and of course Cummings and serial failing Dido Harding.
    Massive Brexitory hypocrisy yet again!

  11. The Lords get over £300.00 a day tax free just for signing in and get priority when they need the Police if they have any problems with Illegal Immigrants
