Anger over European regulations grows among French farmers • FRANCE 24 English

The Autumn rain these fields are saturated this farmer was meant to sew wheat in December but was unable to the Earth is like clay if you plant cereal crops in these conditions you know they won’t grow under EU regulations he has to grow wheat this year last year it was ma a

Crop rotation that preserves the soil and since he won’t be able to do so in time he will have to explain why it’s a document we have to fill out well I have to state the land parcel number its surface area what I plan to

Grow and what I will be growing and on top of that geolocalized photos these steps are compulsory or he could risk losing part of the €60,000 in European funding that he receives each year so the plot of land we just saw it’s the same one here he’s been filling

Out his documents for 2 weeks a tedious process he says this isn’t why I do the job I do the job because I want to produce and I live off selling what I produce there are also standards for other Farmers here in northeastern France Samuel Ganan raises

Lambs he has to declare each treatment he administers on an application today for instance he’s giving them vitamins the monitoring is essential but sometimes too complicated for every procedure we need to State the number of the animal and which procedure was carried out it’s constant and timec consuming we

Could be using the time to look after our animals Farmers need to respect the standards in order to receive funding every year 9 billion of European funding is distributed to Farmers across France

Anger is growing among France’s farmers. Among their frustrations are multiple constraints and standards they face that make their work more complicated, such as requirements to sow crops on certain dates, regardless of the weather. If they don’t abide by these rules, they could lose European funding, as FRANCE 24’s Charlotte Hughes explains.

  1. If they're receiving government money quite right they should monitor what they're growing and administering to their animals.

  2. We should encourage farmers to get together to solve their problems instead of relying on government solutions.

  3. Easy, don´t give them more funding and let them do whatever they please. It is well known that the CAP has historically been as source of problems and a costly policy that mainly benefits French farmers. On top of that, this farmers ironically complain about the CAP and how anoying is to get the funding. Well cut it, and everyone will be happy.

  4. One size fits all shoes tends to fail eventually …..One policy for all likewise. The E.U. was always going to tear itself apart in a Rumplestiltskin tantrum when different climate conditions and different standards of civil service honesty lead to different results for equal exertions.

  5. Welcome to the EU. French farmers were never supportive of British farmers. 9bn a year ? How much did UK farmers get ?

  6. If Danish Farmers made a riot every time something didn't fit their liking, they wouldn't be able to produce anything!
This is nonsense! Work or stop being Farmers, if so unsuited to do the job!!

  7. Most of this red tape is being created by people who have little to no farming or business experience. Bureaucrats are drowning us in red tape and for the most part don’t have a clue what they’re doing. I fully sympathize with the farmers I see the same red tape in the US especially in parts where it’s highly saturated with bureaucrats.

  8. EU farmers receive $65,000+ in EU Funding every year (I still cannot believe how much money they each get). Even during very good times you still receive that lovely $65,000 payment. They ask for a little paperwork and to help keep our environment clean; you spend those tax-payer funded EU subsudies on driving your tractor back and forth to Paris. Oh, and starting fires and overturning other trucks full of food that people depend on.
Trust me, a lot of your local farmers are living just fine. Those who are not protesting understand how the farming industry works….others have become greedy thanks to the EU's BIG handout they happily receive and push their refresh button on their computer the minute the money is supposed to be deposited. Greedy….
A lot of families don't even make $65,000 – let alone receive a free handout in the mail.
You'll get no pitty from me…
