I love Gross but this is the most 0 information article.
“over the past 100 years as each era has specialized in either attacking or defending” it basically means that nowadays we need versatile players, but in 20 years we will say that it is better to be very excellent at one specific thing than to be generally good at several things.
How can he play for all the football clubs at the same time?
Not taking anything away from gross, but wijnaldum did this 5 or 6 years ago.
Was the article about gross or versatility?
Hold down the S key on your phone keyboard to spell Groß like he does
I really Hope he gets selected for the German National Team hes such a great player and has been Carrying Brighton through all the injuries theyve recieved
What this piece fails to really acknowledge is that the skill set isn’t what makes Groß special, it’s the tactical acumen and discipline to make the right decisions and link up well from anywhere on the pitch. That depth of intuitive game understanding isn’t the future of the sport, it’s a rare gift. There’s a reason Total Football didn’t actually take over the world, it’s fuckin hard to execute.
If anything, the future forecast here is that he will make a great manager if that’s what he wants. The “play anywhere” versatile players are great to have but are more supplements than essential cogs of trophy-winning teams (with the notable exception of Thomas Müller, but even he was more an ambiguous floating attacker than a do-it-all), which are generally the ones shaping the future of football.
Brighton are phenomenal stalwarts of the upper mid-table but are hardly threatening for trophies, and Groß is hardly trailblazing. James Milner? John O’Shea? Philip Lahm? Hell, Rooney would be a phenom anywhere on the pitch. Milner and O’Shea were cult heroes but never THE ingredient to their team’s successes, and Lahm/Rooney were at their best when they nailed down one role for an extended period.

Total football? The past is the future again.
Unrelated, but the [“Pascal Grob” thread is the most I have ever laughed at this sub.](https://www.reddit.com/r/PremierLeague/s/JTH8IPYZTI)
