Firefighters battle forest fires in southwest China as thousands evacuated

China’s southwestern Sichuan province battled raging forest fires over the weekend, state broadcaster CCTV said, and firefighters were still working to bring the flames under control.

Firefighters dropped fire-retardant and sprayed water at the blaze and smoke after a fire broke out in Baizi village of Yajiang county and spread, according to state new agency Xinhua.

Authorities deployed more than 1,000 fire crews to three main fire sites to bring the fire under control.

The forest fire prompted evacuation orders for more than 5,900 residents, CCTV said.

  1. I don't understand why China, a country being so technical advanced in so many areas, but they have yet to employ water bombers in fighting major forest fires, like other countries have done so to date.
