‘Clearly a victory for Russia’ as ICJ dismisses bulk of Ukraine’s terror case against Russia

Fernand tell us a bit more about the Court’s decision today is it a victory for Russia a victory for Ukraine indeed a victory for both well this is clearly a victory for Russia uh Nadia because almost all of Ukraine’s allegations here were thrown out now they had brought this case under

Two different treaties one is that financing of terrorism act and they were hoping to pin Russia’s support for militias in eastern Ukraine uh under this act however this Court ruled that the provision of weapons provision of training that did not violate this act it is only about providing money uh now

That also destroyed any hopes from Ukraine to pin for example the um Downing of flight mh17 which it has been proven by another Court here in the ha that the weapons were produced by Russia uh that basically disappeared with that ruling uh the only thing that this court

Found is under that financing of terrorism act that Russia failed to comply because they failed to investigate certain individuals who were um told who Ukraine told them could be financing terrorism so that was a violation but that’s small beef if you look at the bigger picture uh the other

Treaty here was about the elimination of all forms of racial violence uh discrimination sorry and uh that again the court did not go along with Ukraine’s arguments they said the fact that the crimeia the TARTA minority in Crimea was being targeted that was not because of their ethnicity but because

Of their political opposition to Russia and that included the closure of the majus the um TARTA representative body in Crimea now the only win as you said was on that Ukrainian language education 90% decrease in Ukrainian language education in Crimea since 2014 uh and the court did say that Russia should

Reinstate Ukrainian language uh education in Crimea however it did not provide any kind of damages for that or any kind of compensation for parents who’ve had to not be able to see their children educated uh and there was a sort of a a slap of the wrist uh for

Russia for violating prelim provisional measures which included the fact that Russia should not aggregate this conflict now of course it has invaded Ukraine uh so to say that it has not aggregated is a is is a very it’s a slap on the wrist it’s something that you

Know the court was very keen to point out that this has been ordered but it doesn’t have any any meet around it they can’t really do anything so really a very good day for Russia here at the icj today all right a good day for Russia what do you think happens now

Fad well so that’s the question this is um a final ruling there is no appeal Poss uh appeal possible uh and this was also uncharted waters I mean this this Treaty of on the financing of terrorism had never been tested at the UN Court uh but it’s part of a larger strategy by

Ukraine something they they’ve called lawfare they’re taking Russia to court in various different for uh fora and they’ll actually be back here at the icj within 2 days on Friday there will be another case here being discussed that Ukraine has brought against Russia this time on the violation of the uh genocide

Convention uh and there again the court will have its say on where this court has jurisdiction so another battle coming in uh between Russia and Ukraine here at the icj fernan vet at the hag thank you very much indeed

The United Nations’ top court on Wednesday mostly rejected Ukraine’s claims that Russia was financing “terrorism” in eastern Ukraine, saying only that Moscow had failed to investigate alleged breaches. Fernande Van Tets, FRANCE 24’s correspondent in the Netherlands, reports from The Hague on why this ruling is such a victory for Russia.

  1. Don’t understand the logic that must be bad day for Russia or Ukraine! Any peace talk and deals! This we want hear! No 1 is doing anything! Stop war and the weapons trade!!!

  2. Lawfare? 😂 Law and war require the same type is strategic mindset. Doesn't seem like Ukrainians or whoever is backing them up isable of strategic thinking. They're not going anywhere. Ukrainians have just let their country be destroyed by the west. Good game.

  3. Thumbs down.
Huge ruling informations were left out.
For example Luhansk and Donetsk opposition don't make them terrorist organisations by ICJ rule.
Several important declarations missing from this report, sadly.

  4. It is now clear that the ICJ has been captured and has no legitimacy or credibility – just another bias institution

  5. ICJ is just another hoax on the civilians of western nations. We'll use the Ukrainian language part as our point, has anyone thought to ask the people who live in these parts what they want? If so, they would tell you themselves they voted out the Ukrainian language.

  6. MH17 was proven? Really? It was an obvious false flag operation. It’s very similar to IL-76 when Ukraine shot down a Russian plane carrying 65 Ukrainian POWs that were supposed to be exchanged for Russian POSthat was shot down by Ukrainians over Belgorod.

  7. Interesting how western countries are so quiet on this ruling yet so vocal on one pending, for which there are overwhelming official statements, videos and pictures as clear proofs of the accusations. The speed at which these countries are losing all credibility on the world stage is quite something.

  8. The question is will Russian believe the biased decisions of ICJ,😂😂😂.

If Israel is not, why is the Russian is Violet 😂😂😂😂

  9. Well done everyone you have established both sides have fair claim. Now tell me how justified the actions have been in regards to this claim?

  10. Comparing to all the wars that the US has fought, after all the US got away with killing a million Iraqis, the Russians are waging a very clean war and are clearly not targeting civilians
