I get why they changed it from "man of the match", but we lost the alliteration now which makes me sad. Why isn't it "best player on the pitch?".
It just sounds so sterile now, Idk if I'm alone in over-valuing the aesthetics of language but its been bugging me since it changed.
EDIT: Wow I was wrong, I didn't get the why they changed it. Turns out someone else bought the trademark. So its nothing to do with gender neutrality.

Man of the Match sounds right.
Player of the Match just sounds too forced.
Changing it from 4 monosyllabic words with the emphasised words being alliterative was just aesthetically pleasing in the English language. Maybe it’s one of those terms that is lost in translation though, and “player of the match” sounds better in other languages?
Premier player performance is probably the worst one I thought of. 🤢

I’ve never really seen the issue with it personally – you can have it gender-aligned or not, it means the same thing.

I’m a girl, and whenever we played football in primary school (all the girls were much more “Tomboy” back then) everyone used to call it MOTM even if it was a girl.
I think it’s ridiculous to change it especially when it’s the men’s team playing.

Man of the match was so cool. Player of the match is bland and sounds off. They could have Man of the match for men’s team and Player of the match for women’s and youth teams. That would be reasonable and everyone would be happy.

On the other hand we have “player of the month” and “player of the season.” Player of the match fits in theme with them more than “man of the match,” which since it does not specify player, could in theory have been given to an official, manager, coach or even a man in the crowd.
It’s man of the match, since there are only men on the field, in the match.
Why can’t it be called man of the match in the men’s game still? Only men are playing men’s football… right?

Unfortunately it’s because of woke bullshit, any normal person with a functioning brain would realise that man of the match or woman of the match is fine.

Why is everyone in the comments saying its about woke agenda? Didn’t they change it because of a trademark issue? Someone bought the rights of the phrase Man of The Match from the previous owner and decided to enforce it. Broadcasters need to pay to use the phrase MOTM so they decided to just use a different phrase
