If you believe what has been written about Vitor Roque's contract (e.g. Mundo Deportivo) Barcelona will be due a EUR 5 million add-on payment to his former club Athletico Paranaense if he participates in more than 50% of (eligible) games per season for Barca.

A quick glance at transfermarkt.com reveals that Roque has participated in 13 games with Barcelona so far…out of 24 games for which he was in the squad. So as of last weekend, he has been on the pitch in 54% of Barca's games for which he was eligible to play. A detailed breakdown is as follows:

  • La Liga – 11 games played, 4 on the bench, 1 suspended
  • Champions Leauge – 0 games played, 4 on the bench
  • Copa del Rey – 2 games played, 1 on the bench
  • Supercopa – 0 games played, 2 on the bench

With 4 more games left in La Liga, Roque will be able to get just under the 50% threshold. In fact, if he was used in one more game and assuming he neither gets a suspension or gets injured, he could end up at exactly 50%. This means that Xavi would have to wait until the final match day to even consider using him in a game.

Now I haven't seen his contract with my own eyes, but if this clause is indeed true, it all the sudden makes perfect sense, why Roque is not seeing any playing time.

  1. The problem here looks more like, xavi isn’t even talking to him. If this was a lie either roque or xavi would have said it is not the truth. But both have been quite so far so looks like it is the truth. And xavi also said nothing about roque’s future so he is totally ignoring roque and pushing him out. With all the bitching and this roque saga, it makes xavi look childish.
