King Charles Reveals His First Official Portrait Since the Coronation

done that and there yeah it’s remarkable actually how it has turned out has it changed that much since you last saw it a little bit I had to put on the extra Metals in the then you fiddled away didn’t you up here somewhere I did yes exactly I’m trying not to make it worse basically ask if I get nervous before unveilings and well no not normally but then the subject doesn’t normally become king halfway through the process so um so bear with me a bit um uh and than you obviously it’s a joy and honor to be here um I think on behalf of everyone I that’s pretty safe to say um and uh I just thank the Drapers for giving you know this lovely opportunity to do this and William Charley for the one for instigating it um um but above all to the subject um for you know trusting me with it and giving me so much of his time um and um uh people often say do you know is there is there a secret to doing a good portrait and uh I used to say well I don’t know really good actually I think there is one and that’s basically have a interesting subject to start with U and she couldn’t ask for a better one than this other than her majesty who years ago I’m very careful I won’t bang on about the picture except um to explain two bits of artistic license I took while doing it one is the color obviously which you probably notic uh and which um was inspired by the um the bright red tunic of the Welsh guards and then the other thing is the butterfly and that um well I I’d love to take full credit for that um it was actually the subject’s idea and I think so it’s a little s visual device and then um and then when yeah he he he he changed jobs halfway through the process then had added resonance because you have um you the buz play in art history terms is the symbol of the at morphosis so we you got a spot fruit to hang well um Mr Philip mold is going is going to house it next two months um to deal with all the amazing publicity be and then um I’m afraid moving your mother’s portrait where she’ll move into the court there is some I [Music]

King Charles has unveiled the first completed official portrait of himself since The Coronation, painted by renowned artist Jonathan Yeo.

The portrait was commissioned in 2020 to celebrate the then Prince of Wales’s 50 years as a member of The Drapers’ Company.

The portrait depicts His Majesty wearing the uniform of the Welsh Guards, of which he was made Regimental Colonel in 1975.

The canvas was carefully considered to fit within the architecture of Drapers’ Hall and the context of the paintings it will eventually hang alongside. Report by Matthew Covell.

    But then the viewer must come close up to see what is there ,

    up-close the details that appear from the swirls of red.

    Two main items forces your attention, the face is incredibly telling

  7. It’s hideous! The king is bathed in blood with his most negative traits shown (i.e. sausage fingers and wrinkled face). Is the violent smearing of blood to represent the millions of ethnicities killed in their colonies?

  18. Idk why but the fact the artist predominantly used red is annoying me. I'm sure if you look at the painting from a distance, you will only see a floating head and hands of Charles
