OpenAI set to announce search engine, one day before Google conference • FRANCE 24 English

now this Monday open aai is set to announce plans for a search engine powered by artificial intelligence that’s according to Reuters news agency it’s the latest challenge to search King Google and that announcement would come a day before Google’s annual developer conference well for more I’m joined by our technology editor Peter O’Brien Peter is Google nervous about this hi Allison good question I think if you ask Google CEO Sund pshai he would not say he’s nervous he’d say he was not sweating and certainly he’d say he’s not dancing to anyone’s tune in fact that’s exactly what he told Bloomberg this week in an interview with Emily Chang that was a J at Microsoft CEO SATA Nadella who in February last year said the release of their B their new being uh chat with artificial intelligence would make Google dance um perhaps there more reflection on Google though that Su pitchy is still rattled about this comment more than a year later certainly since September um Bing has absolutely been on the Forefront it was once widely mocked as a as a um as a search engine but now if you use Bing um it will give you a summary of results using an AI uh chatbot that pops up you can also use co-pilot which not only generates response but responses but also gives you citations to the news articles where it’s found the information and it’s not just Microsoft as you say open AI will be launching we think its own very own uh search engine powered by its Cutting Edge Ai and there’s uh there’s another company that’s thrown its hat in the ring perplexity AI also based in San Francisco with just a few dozen employees they now have more than 10 million monthly active users um for my money it’s the most streamlined AI search engine experience they call it a um an answer uh engine and my colleague Gom C in April caught up with aravan shrinivas who’s the CEO of perplexity take a listen perplexity is a conversational answer engine it just directly gives you answers to your questions with references provided in form of citations and our company is trying to reimagine what the future of search looks like search is the most fundamental largest software category it’s a software used by billions of people so our company is trying to reimagine that by trying to take us from consuming 10 Blue Links to personalize answers that just cut through the noise that exists on the web and gives you exactly what you wanted yeah so when he says cut through the noise there he’s specifically referring to Google which has come under criticism in recent years for its search results being bombarded with ads and kind of junk results uh websites that are just there to optimize their place placement in the Google results just to get more ad Revenue a lot of these pages are now even generated by by AI personally I think the criticism sometimes goes a bit far I still find it very easy to find the information that I need to find on Google but Google is under pressure and it’s um it’s not only introduced uh AI powered res results for its uh search engine but that’s only been for beta testers up till now and it’s chatbot Gemini which used to be called B Bard did provide citations when it searched the web but uh they those seem to have disappeared in the last week I certainly can’t find them anymore Gemini by all accounts is one of the most powerful AI models but as this competition is very Fierce we’re expecting on Tuesday Google to try and prove that it’s dancing but in its own way and perhaps without doing the one step forward two step back with dance Smo okay gosh I feel so out of the loop I only ever kind of naturally go to Google but I’m going to have to try out some of these other search engines they sound good um how could this change the internet are we still going to be Googling in 10 years time or will we be open aiing or yeah I think yeah they’ve got to start thinking about cuz I can’t imagine myself oh I’m just going to perplexity that you know it just doesn’t have the same we can see in this chart here that the there is still an massive mountain to climb I mean look at Google’s dominance over search billions are still reliant on it what this doesn’t quite capture is how many people are using different websites other than search engines to do their um information gathering now so on places like Tik Tok Reddit Wikipedia directly YouTube of course and now increasingly these AI chat chat Bots Tik Tok is particularly used by young people for instance to search up information there’s also the little thing of the biggest anti trust trial in two decades so Google is Accused by the justice department in the US of um of having an unfair Monopoly over the search engine Market over things using things like its contracts with um Apple to to make sure it Remains the default uh Choice when you search on your phone um even if there is a ruling in Google’s favor I think if these AI search engines start to get much better well contract these contractors could start looking out elsewhere and in terms of what that means for the internet I’m not sure it’s good for news for us Allison if these chatbots really do demolish everything in their path or what happens to original writing um if we no no longer need to go on news websites but have everything summarized for us how are those news websites going to get paid obviously we’ve seen some of them start to do deals with these these AI companies um but yeah you do have to the question doesn’t that just consolidate more power around these tech companies to decide who gets to feature on their chat Bots results and in any case they’re trained on what humans right and they they look up things humans right so if there a few hum writing things what happens to information in the world yeah at a certain point they’re going to run out of of material if we’re not making any new material for them

OpenAI will announce plans for a search engine powered by artificial intelligence on Monday May 13, Reuters reports. It’s the latest challenge to search king Google and comes just one day before the tech giant’s annual developer conference. On this week’s Tech 24, Peter O’Brien looks at what might get Google sweating, amid changing search habits, a federal antitrust trial and smart new AI “answer engines”. One of these is Perplexity AI. Speaking to FRANCE 24, CEO Aravind Srinivas says its results “cut through the noise” that comes up on a traditional Google search.

  1. Don’t be blind, Gemini is actually really good. There is a reason why Google has not deployed Gemini as their search bot. Companies are actually working on multi layered hybrid models. You give in your ask and that generates keywords to brute force search the web for very recent information. Then the LLM hashes it down to what you actually asked for. The problem remains that current models act very unpredictable on untested information. They don’t know what is right or wrong. It’s like one of those metal balls you drop in a pin maze.

  2. Reuter's been wrong about everything lately. They said Tesla would give up on low cost cars which is complete false.

  3. for that first you have to open Google chrom. then type open AI search.

and you will also need google drive, photos, gmail maps, sheets, docs etc etc 😂😂😂 so its better to not change all these for only one search engine.

  4. Perplexity blows Google out of the water for asking questions and not only getting streamlined concise answers but suggestions for additional questions,
Google is only a step above bing for looking at websites, it is not relevant to me for gaining or expanding my knowledge anymore as it has too much spam to wade through to get any kind of answer to a question

  5. Sunder pichai, Satya Nadella and Arvind srinivas, all of them are Indians. I want to see a healthy competition among them.

Best of luck for all of them.

    🕉️ Shanti (peace 🕊️)

  6. funfact they are launching their search engine now google already launch before them and google search is best open ai search only give particular answer to particular question

  7. Very nice..google will be forced to replace or perish its search results page ranking by advst payments over the context… Gemini versus openAI search will be exciting to watch as value will be incredible with the AI search context rather then advst payment domination.

  8. To be honest the Google search system is chaos, you are looking for something, now, you have the answer buried in the middle of extra text made to keep you on the page, that is also loaded with many big ad frames, you end scrolling for two line that doesn’t even give you a proper answer..

  9. Perplexity is already better than google. And if open AI launch an search engine, i definitely like it to be better than perplexity.

  10. Google search an old school dumb site. It just give you articles and sites that have few keywords that you have typed for you to scroll and look for what you want. At many times you don't get exactly what you want.

  11. Google: We still have our great google search engine and billions in ads money we make hahahahaha!
Altman: Thats a nice search engine ya got there, ya wouldn't want anything to happen to it right?

  12. 5:39 that's not true. They won't need humans to write things for them. The robots will be able to observe things in the world and aggregate data around world events and report on it in ways that's humans never could.
