How easy is it to find used cars in Norway – I am looking for cars registered in Norway itself.
Because of being from the US and having a wife and a baby, I know the convenience that a car can bring and I am looking to buy a used car for family camping trips, doctor visits etc. I don't intend to use it for day to day transport but that could change. Upon looking at the cost of car ownership and associated taxes on the tax administration website (www.skatteetaten.no), it seems that only the transfer fee is required and no registration tax will be levied. The scrap deposit tax isn't mentioned but the website says that registration fees is needed for buying a used car if it was previously registered in Norway. Therefore, I am looking for cars that are already registered and don't need to be imported.
I understand that there are annual taxes through car insurance and a weight based tax as well. The cars that I am looking at are Japanese/Korean made sedans such as Honda City/Toyota Corolla or mid size SUVs such as Mazda CX-5/CX-30/or preferably Toyota RAV4 (below the 7500 kg limit). Even in the US, I always bought used cars and usually was okay with anything below 80K miles on the car.
How difficult will it be to find something like that in Norway?
Some background :
I am a US citizen and was recently offered a job in Norway, and I am considering moving there with my wife and kid. The wages offered are 900k NoK, which is lower than what I get in the US. We are seeing this as a 2-3 year adventure in the worst case scenario or a semi-permanent move in the best case. My wife is keeping her PhD GRA job in the US for the time being and is going to work remotely if we move to Norway. She will start looking for jobs in Norway after she finishes the program. She is getting a PhD in Statistics and I have a PhD in Materials Science. Depending on how her job search goes and what type of opportunities come along for me, we will decide if we will stay longer or move back.

Pretty much all used cars are sold through finn.no. It’ll be easy, but your main issue will be getting bankID as soon as possible. Once you have it, registering cars, signing up for insurance and everything else becomes super-easy.
Car = easy *Once you get BankID (took me 10 weeks).
Your bigger problem will be getting your license transferred.
Moved here 4 months ago and am still waiting on approval to book the two tests needed before they’ll consider transferring it.
