World Environment Day: Earth warming at record rate, 2023 the warmest year on record • FRANCE 24
now global warming has reached an all-time high 2023 smashing the record for the warmest year this according to the world’s leading climate scientists in a report published today they warned that our remaining carbon budget could be spent in the next 5 years pushing the world beyond the 1.5° C of warming it comes as the month of May is likely to be the 12th consecutive month of record-breaking global temperatures joining me now is our environment editor Valerie de I know Valerie I bumped into you in the corridor a couple of weeks ago and was moaning about how the weather here in France wasn’t uh turning and changing but very rainy exactly but now things seems to have changed let’s talk about uh what is going on because there’s no doubt that hum human activity is driving this riseing temperatures which we’re seeing scientists say that 2023 was still unusual tell us more about that well they what they tell us in this report is that the rate of warming is unprecedented so essentially it hit uh 0.26 de C per decade that’s up from 0.25 which sounds like a minor change but it is the highest ever recorded in in terms of the rate of warming and that brings us to last year um hitting 1.43 de C of warming compared to the pre-industrial era so scientists say that’s not just a little jump it is an unusual jump and so they try to look into it um and like you said h on surp surprisingly human activity is mostly to blame here uh the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from the use of fossil fuels and they found uh that was pretty interesting to me that 92% of last year’s heat was caused by humans the rest mostly due to Alo we’ve talked about this before this natural warming phenomenon in uh the Pacific Ocean that could bring changes um in climate changes around the world what’s interesting though is that they also look at uh the another Factor contributing to heat and that is the decline in air pollution and so essentially we need to distinguish between greenhouse gases and particles a fine particles in the air from car fumes from factories I mean both of th those sources emit greenhouse gases Planet warming gases but also fine particles aerosols that you also find in uh Wildfire smoke essentially it is yes um and so that is obviously bad for our health but it can have a cooling effect in the atmosphere for the climate because essentially what you see there Delano is that those particles that can reflect some of the sun’s energy back into space not all of it but some of it um it is a minor uh effect according to a scientists but air pollution in Europe us China could be uh behind you know the rise in temperatures as well now what’s particularly alarming is the fact that the world’s carbon budget uh is rapidly running out what does this mean exactly well scientists have established a threshold of 1.5 Dees celsus uh Beyond which we will see more dangerous climate impacts um and how quickly we get to that point depends on how much carbon dioxide we’re putting into the atmosphere now we know that in 2022 Global annual emissions reach 55 billion tons um and we know though that we have a budget of 200 billion tons left uh before we hit that critical threshold of 1.5 degrees and so that is the equivalent of 5 years of current emission so that brings us to 2029 and what’s alarming is that scientists previously had this budget I mean they thought the budget was 500 uh million tons and they revised it to 200 billion tons and so that’s what’s really alarming uh Valerie you often come with bad news for us here but today you have some sort of good news from scientists yes well in the report they do have some positive news um they tell us that greenhouse gas emissions have not yet risen Beyond uh pre pandemic levels uh and also that the rate um at which emissions have grown in the last decade has slowed since the year 2000 um so scientists say that emissions have indeed rebounded from the covid-19 pandemic but it is too early to say if greenhouse gas emissions have already peaked and so essentially what that means is that they’re relatively stable emissions um we know that CO2 emissions from coal and gas and oil are rising but they remain below prepandemic levels now we don’t need to stabilize emissions and that’s what scientists tell us we actually need to bring them down to zero so even though they are not uh Rising yet Beyond pre-pandemic levels as long as emissions continue at the same level the warming will continue at the same level B thank you very much for that that c out with sort of a silver lining I don’t know if it’s good news or not but we’ll take it we’ll take it thank you for that we take what we can
On the United Nations World Environment Day, scientists warn our remaining carbon budget could be spent in the next five years, pushing the world beyond 1.5 degrees celsius of warming. Last calendar year, 2023, was the warmest on record at 1.48C higher than the pre-industrial average. The Paris Agreement aims to hold global warming below 1.5C and well-below 2C, which experts say is crucial for keeping earth’s systems in balance. FRANCE 24’s Environment Editor Valérie Dekimpe tells us more.

All the coming years are going to be hotter than privious one.
It's already past the 1.5 C. Get real. Short term estimate: 0.36 C temperature rise per decade and accelerating.
When governments tell us of global warming it's not this that should be concerning-it's the bigger reason they are not telling us that is. If uv bounce back to space is reduced because of global emissions causing more uv soak up in our atmosphere – well on a larger scale less uv or light is refracted back into space & so the immediate problem would be the planets not being able to correctly position the earth along its trajectory or orbital path-this could cause huge magnetic variance issues resulting in volcanoes erupting everywhere, also earthquakes, massive superstores & changes to global gulf & jet streams as well as almost every type of natural disaster day by day globally: which amazingly is actually happening now which is probably the reason most governments have gone quite about climate change & global warming-as they know there is nothing they can do now – hence billionaire are currently building underground bunkers. Good luck surviving all of what's about to happen.
You DO realize that IT'S NOT GOING TO STOP! The major polluters STILL refuse to acknowledge there is a PROBLEM. I'm 82, and will not be here for the finale pollution-choking finale when Earth turns oxygen into CO2 and the oceans into still ooze devoid of life. That's within the next thirty YEARS, But my grandkid may be part of the Great Die-Off that is due. Thank the Investor-class for our demise. Greed KILLS. EVERYTHING.
We've hit 1.5 heading to 2.0 by 2030
I pray 🙏 for everyone who has been and is still being affected by drought, heatwaves, wildfires, flooding, and sinkholes as a direct result of the climate change crisis and global warming as well as your government mismanagement.
I am informing you that there's a viable solution to mitigate climate change crisis and global warming together with all the devastations they are causing, but your governments have to approve the solution
Stay safe in the meantime

Climate lockdowns coming soon.
Everyone here pretends when you bring emission to zero, you stabilize and stop temperature increase, how simple minded is this thinking…..There is lag effect plus positive feedbacks… Fml
I heard yesterday that flying abroad has never been so high. People are wanting their precious holidays no matter what, so here we are…
Errr… SO2 an aerosol, that has most cooling impact, is a cloud nucleai creator. This means SO2 emissions adds more low lying clouds that reflects the sunlight away. Overall aerosol cooling effect is somewhere at 0,6-1,4C range. And now we are seeing that, because of the reduced shipping emissions and large emission reductions in China (70% drop in 2007-2017), EU and USA.
SO2 also creates lots of health issues and it is part of acid rains. (Forms sulphuric acid H2SO4 with water).
But if we do not reduce fossil fuel emissions, then greenhouse gases keeps on building in the atmosphere and planet keeps on warming.
Stop burning fossil fuels. Today.
We are past 1.5. The damage adds up, it's cumulative! 1.5 was probably reachable if Gore had made it into office. We are heading past 2.0.
365 day running average is 1.63C (copernicus ERA5 data, relative 1850-1900).
17 month average is over 1.5C
Will be interesting to see if Aerosols have "minor effect" ( 2:49 ), or it turns out they have a large effect and we are actually going up at 0.4C / decade. E.g. is Hansen's analysis correct.
Should find out in the next few years.
No mention of IMO shipping sulphur regulations.
Have to have the "happy chapter" minute at the end. Not sure ( 4:15 ) slowing of the rate of growth qualifies as good news. Check the UNEP gap report.
At last count 30 million delinquent oil wells across the planet, spewing out h4 above and below the ocean waves, continuously, 24/7 and there are thousands more that aren't on any register being found by Government departments across the world. If these same government departments acted according to their charter they would insist that the owners recap all the leaking wells. this is estimated to cost from $6000 a well to millions dependent on the extent of the leak. ignore it or send the fossil fuel industry broke reinstating the safety of every well. no cheap energy. boom there goes you lathe and big screen tv. . your only chance is to grow a food forest and hope like crazy you have an aptitude for all things in the natural domain because that's all there will be. good luck with that everybody.
Decline in air pollution is causing global warming. We must pollute!
The Earth doesn't care. Its gone thru this before and look, its still here. A lot of species are not.
And Nobody Examines Nuclear Waste Impacts In The Oceans.
Atmospheric co2 levels are almost twice what they were when I was young
Humans was not the cause
Environment regulations corruption from Capitalism is the cause
The warming where I live always happens in June and then ends in October. Each latitude on Earth experiences a different climate. Thus claiming climate change or warming is caused by man and not a natural part of the seasonal cycles per latitude would be foolish. The Earth is heated by the sun, not CO2. Did you know, the Earth cools on an average of 30° F between day and night. A few degrees means nothing compared to seasonal changes in temperature at any given latitude.
Predictions made by climate alarmists over the past 100 years have been wrong every time, from global cooling, droughts, fires, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, temperature records, global warming, to the point they couldn't keep up so they resorted to calling their propaganda climate change.
The 1930's dust bowl was the hottest on record, before big manufacturing took off. Those temperatures have not been broken. Claiming 2023 was the hottest year on record is a lie.
Everything is going to be alright. The Earth will reach a limit to warming, more rain will fall, and we should enjoy a lush greener planet.
she spent most of the time talking about 8% of the warming. oil simp.
Direct energy weapons all on? As expected, what else could bring it on. Not carbon oh chemtrails seen in the skies.
Ah hell just move the bar again to 1950 to 2000.
A neighbour is concerned about global warming, but she puts the tumble dryer on even on sunny days, whilst their 3 washing lines are empty, they have a car each, both diesel also the Husband has a big land rover which comes back full of mud as he goes 'green lane' bashing in the Dalby forest, then he spends around 20 to 30 minutes blasting all the mud off with a petrol powered pressure washer, they rarely cook at home as she admits it's simpler to go out to either McDonald's, KFC, Greggs or Burger king, they have 2 children and she just announced a third one on the way and is concerned about the global warming and also the cost of living! lol.
I'm sorry but if everyone else is like that, then all that can happen is more global warming, you ain't gonna stop it⚠
Gaz UK
We are doomed yet we keep burning fossil fuels
How come none of these "Experts" ever mention volcanic eruptions and the stuff they spew out?… 😂
1.5 is history, to say anything else is fantasy surely!
Climate destabilization is an outcome of the economy. Stop framing it as a ‘weather’ story. The wealthiest 20% of humanity are cooking us all alive because they refuse to share. And since we are forced to live in a world where wealth is power, those same people are the ones empowered to take away their own wealth and power for the benefit of all. Is it any wonder emissions have never cone down? That the rate of increase, has only increased? And the emissions correlate to global GDP, which correlates to productivity, which correlates to energy use. The self-terminating climate path we are on can never be functionally reversed or stabilized in the context of an economic system that goes into decline and terminal crisis whenever it is given limits or different objectives. We’re in a vicious double bind. The climate is physics and chemistry, so it’s the economy we invented that needs to change. Because sacrificing the habitability of the biosphere to suit the economy and its need to grow is about the dumbest idea humans have had in a litany of big mistakes and dumb ideas.
Meanwhile, here in West Germany, It's June and at nights it 8°C. All the plants and trees missing the Sun and the heat.
Perhaps at some point we could see changes that cannot be attributed to men's activities?
Are you kidding? Why don't you invite someone like me to talk about the environment and more importantly the solutions… this is just a f'ing theater to make some content!
They’ve amended the carbon budget from 500 million to 200 billion tonnes, if that doesn’t indicate they’ve completely given up to you, you’re not paying attention
Please stop the BS. It's called summer. And BTW the planet /universe has always changed.
These people are lying we are already at 1.5
USA will leave Paris agreement in next government 😂
So the SD of the ten tallest buildings in NYC is:
224.49178158677 feet.
So multiply that by 6…
That gets 1,346.95068952062 ft.!
Now the average height of those 10 buildings was 1328 ft.
So let’s just say you were looking at the NYC skyline, and suddenly a building appeared that was roughly twice as high as the 10 tallest buildings, do you think people might notice!
You are BLIND! It is going to get bad folks. This is no Joke! Start planting 2,000,000,000,000 TREES! Start Planting Trees in Australia. North and South of Unites States, Europe, Asia. Middle East, Africa, China, Africa. ETC Before it's too Late! Trees helps to remove the CARBON! Trees cleans the AIR!
..I don't see that the journalists in the West got excited about the brutal massacre of civilians in Gaza by the Jews … but their mouths are full of Russia, climate change, human rights …
This year oil production hit a record beyond the 2019 pre-pandemic level, so I expect everything will continue to get worse. You can safety ignore the obligatory good news at the end.
Too many people. All these groups trying to out populate the other like a competition
