A 10 has to complement the striker. With Kane dropping deep, England’s 10 has to be able to bomb forward and occupy the space he leaves behind, which Jude does very well. Foden wants to operate “in the hole”, ie exactly the same space as Kane, so they just get in each otherms way. This isn’t an issue at City because Haaland wants to stay high.
Kane really can’t play the full match. Either he’s not match fit or he’s still carrying the injuries from the back. In the last twenty minutes, the game desperately needed a target man to take the pressure off and have an outlet. Every time England cleared the ball, Kane was miles off challenging for it
Don’t know enough about positioning and spacing in soccer (football) but watching that match Bellingham looked to me like the best player in the pitch.
Where was Cole Palmer? Runner up player of the year and couldn’t get a game!

Foden is the most over hyped player in the world
It’s weird he just never clicks for England, as good as he is for City he’s almost never good for his country. A big reason for me is that he just flat out isn’t a left winger. Doesn’t provide width and doesn’t play in crosses that as we saw today, won the game with Saka’s cross to Bellingham.
He’s great on the right and better more central, but for England Saka is better on the right and Bellingham is better in the middle.
Gordon makes more sense on the left but to leave Foden out completely is wild for a player of his quality. It’s tough because there is so much quality up top there.
Bellingham was a beast today won them the match almost single handed
Gallagher over Trent all day long
I’m not going to dig out Foden, a player doesn’t become crap overnight. We just have to accept that this style of play doesn’t suit him, Bellingham can play box to box and is overall a better player so can do well in this team although I still think that’s in spite of the setup.
Foden needs to play on the edge of the oppositions box receiving the ball in tight areas and unlocking the defense. England don’t hold the ball in that area, we prefer to pass it back to Pickford and build up from the back. Foden does not play like that.
If we are going to win this it’s going to be without Foden and TAA, we have to accept that. I think a better manager can get more out of them.
Foden did a great Rashford impression tonight. Jogging around and no pressing. He also looked lost and was basically on top of Bellingham instead of staying wide. With him disappearing and Kane dropping deep and not holding the ball (he had 2 touches in the first half) we were basically playing with 9 men. Kane needs to stay up top and let players like Bellingham, Saka and a competent left winger do all the hard work.
I mean….it’s his number so…
While I’m not going to defend Foden too much, his performance was poor, comparing Bellingham who’s playing in his best position to Foden who by necessity is playing in his third choice position is a little unfair. he’s at his best on the right half-space. not playing a left-sided traditional winger,
England looks more like an all-star team built overnight than a team managed by the same boss for eight years. Where is the cohesion?
Is Southgate just penciling in every sexy name into the 11 to get grace from the media and fans?
I think you also need wingers making runs in behind e.g Son for Kane at Tottenham, which isn’t Fodens game. As Kane won’t be making runs. Foden just suffocates the spaces Bellingham and Kane want to be in. I think he needs to be used as a super sub as Bellinghams all round game along with the confidence and mentality he brings is just too good.
Unpopular opinion warning*** saka was better. You can say he trailed off in the second but so did Jude.
Phil can’t catch a break… holy fuck. The England midfield is ripe for talent and they believe Saka is better in a position where Phil thrives. You need him coming on to his left foot, so he needs to be right or in a cm position on the right.
Perhaps with more training than what’s been had isn’t enough to get him up to using his right foot and that’s not his problem.
You want him to succeed, put him where he succeeds.
Jude’s actually quite good at football
