‘Massive’ Russian attack on Ukraine’s power infrastructure | DW News

to Ukraine now and a fresh wave of Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure overnight injuring at least two energy workers Ukrainian officials say the attacks targeted facilities in the zapia and Lviv regions they say Ukraine’s air defense systems shot down 12 of the 16 missiles and all 13 drones launched by Russia it was the second major strike this week after missiles hit the city of Ky and Odessa on Friday let’s bring in military analyst Frank ledwidge on this uh good to see you Frank as always what strategic advantages does Russia aim to achieve by targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure good morning Michael well I think as as most of the viewers will know and remember this is part of a long campaign conducted by the Russian Air Forces or air and space forces against Ukraine’s power generation now before I G it’s well worth mentioning that the Ukrainian power system is is very resilient much of it is nuclear powered but more than half that won’t be touched so Ukraine will always retain that core literally that core of power but recently and particularly over the last couple of months Russia’s had great success in the conventional power in attacking conventional power stations notably trilia Power Station South of Kia completely destroyed and several others including an attack last night um it seems to be quite well Ted practically conducted by the Russian Russians four missiles I think from longrange bombers and uh diversions from shahid’s uh producing some degree of damage but it’s part of a long campaign two purposes first to undermine Ukraine’s capability as a state to support its military Endeavor and secondly of course to undermine civilian morale and will to fight of course in the latter uh objective it’s disastrously failing in the former damaging the power capacity it’s it’s unfortunately having some effect Frank you mentioned that uh Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is resilient but we should remind viewers just to give them some perspective that this is now the eighth Massive Attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in the past 3 months what measures is Ukraine taking to protect this infrastructure because a casual Observer might question those message those measures according to president zilinski half of the country’s power facilities have already been destroyed I suspect half of the power facilities been attacked uh and many of them now been repaired and for many many years Ukraine’s been suffering attacks on its power structure not only with Kinetic and explosive attacks like over the the last 18 months or so but also cyber attacks and it’s developed immense expertise in dealing with these things very quickly what’s happened though over the last as you point out Michael over the last three months is that uh the kinetic attacks the missile attacks have been much more consistent and they they’ve penetrated Ukrainian defenses and had much more success so now I’ve got rolling power cuts which really didn’t occur so much before but of course this highlights the need for for increased more dense air defenses because all these attacks come from missiles or well missiles essentially I was going to say bombs not at all don’t have the range for that uh for missiles and that highlights this urgent priority need for Top Class air defenses Ukraine’s ammunition air defense ammunition ran off a cliff to the end of last year it ran out of EX Soviet gear that was very successful very robust but they just ran out of it so they all they’re very greatly dependent now on Western supplied air defense systems your Patriots your Nas your iris and of course uh more low more short range stuff uh and and we’re seeing the results of the lack of that because you can only have so many you’ve got so many platforms need to prioritize sometimes you need them near the front and they’re just very stretched with it hence you get this kind of damage taking place Frank you might very well be leading into my my my last issue here how crucial is international military and financial support in helping Ukraine protect its sensitive infrastructure and what specific Aid is most needed right now would it be anything towards air defenses yes I think that’s the priority and I think that the Ukrainian general staff and indeed president zeleni and his staff would would agree and have said so uh what’s happened as I say over the past few months Ukraine’s become more and more dependent on Western air defenses and we’re talking here particularly the highly effective Patriot nasams which is a norwegian-american system and others but especially Patriot which is uh which has pretty much the highest success rate in the world only yesterday the Americans designed announced that what they were doing now was prioritizing the delivery of Patriots not to contract countries with whom they’ve contracted to deliver them but that newly rolled off missiles that’s interceptors and systems will be going straight to Ukraine zinsky has said he wants 25 batteries that’s 180 launchers or so they haven’t got anything like that most analysts have put them between having at about six batteries so that’s needs to be beefed up efforts are being made but those efforts as I pointed out from well over here much too slow that’s a military analyst Frank ledwidge as always many many thanks Frank thanks Michael

  1. Really how many people here like me come in to see the news of DW and other western media as entertainment and not really as a way to keep up with the news? I really don't even know if they will tell the truth if anyone believes all the western media.

Stalin zadzwonił do niego z Niemiec i wsadził do więzienia. Uciekł i mieszkał w Chinach. Dziewczynę wychowała kopia swojej żony

  3. I stopped the video when he called on "expert" military analyst Frank Ledwidge. This guy does not even try to hide his bias. It's like he was born for one reason to be always negative about russia😂

  4. I stopped the video when I saw him called "expert" military analyst Frank Ledwidge. This guy does not even try to hide his hatred for Russia . He only speaks one language stupidity

  5. I thought a "military analyst" had at least a rudimentary knowledge of how electric power distribution works.

  6. These Cometator has no clue they all ways lying about Ukraine no Country can help Ukraine at all only Russia 🇷🇺 can help

  7. The virus took out USA democracy, but the brotherhood or humanity love stopped nuke or bio warefare 😅,so Russia failed to stop or even halt this war, which is a failure to occure control and avoid loss of life, which shows weekness of power or strategy when even this war started,if its a drama to delay west vs east,we don't know what inteligence agencies ate rigging in the cybernetic space etc ,so its a matter of time

  8. For over a year, Russia attacked substations and not power generation facilities. Those can be repaired in days to a few weeks. Hoping there will be a negotiated end of the war. But with direct attacks inside Russia, energy generation facilities in Ukraine are now being hit. THese take months to years to repair. Repairs that won't even start till the war is over. This is not a guerella war, this is an industrial war so those energy generation facilities are vital to the war effort. In fact Ukraine's war effort could be seriously damaged if US funds to pay Ukrainian govt workers were to be cut off. The US simply can't afford the price tag of $120B/yr to support Zelensky.

  9. When will the west wake up and understand. The aid for Ukraine from the start has never been delivered so Ukraine can win the war, rather so it keeps it going.

Always short supply and never on time. It’s designed that way on purpose. The whole point of the US and NATO – Is too bleed Russia just as they claim.

So Ukraine will never get what is needed at any time period. It was never meant to win.

  10. When you say the Russian missile attacks are failing in their attempts to undermined Ukrainian will to fight.
Its hard to know what the people of Ukraine support since elections were canceled early this year.

  11. What Ukraine needs to do is to become independent of west experts and talk with Russia, but the west is saying we will help you to fight much longer maybe for good.
