around 2,000 Ukrainian evacuees live here in Japan as the war in their Homeland continues some are Keen to settle down and create a life here our next report spotlights a Ukrainian high school student who fled to Japan and dreams of becoming a professional sumo wrestler 16-year-old agor Chan came to Japan from Ukraine last October and his favorite activity is practicing at his school’s sumo Club I love the speed and strength of sumo wrestlers right now I’m working hard on my initial charge technique standing nearly 190 cm tall and weighing 170 kg he already stands out his coach Takahashi Osamu has high hopes for him after he finishes practicing he then studies sumo videos I think he’s the most enthusias among all club members agor started Sumo in Ukraine at the age of five he even competed in an International Tournament but Russia’s invasion of Ukraine changed his life egor’s elder brother went to fight on the front line and he was unable to focus on Sumo training then a Ukrainian sumo wrestler who had earlier moved to Japan suggested agore did the same after relocating beginning training he faced fresh challenges a goal would often throw down opponents but this allowed smaller wrestlers to catch him off guard the coach advised him to use the tactic of pushing forward instead as a way of leveraging his large build when Egor approaches smaller wrestlers with his huge body it’s like a wall is coming toward them and he can overwhelm them agore recently took part in his first official match in Japan his first bout was in the open weight class [Music] category he appeared to have won but his foot touched outside the ring before his opponents so he lost pulling himself together he took part in the plus 100 kg category this time he moved forward carefully and pushed his opponent out of the ring and now is the deciding [Applause] match instead of throwing forcefully aor grabs his opponent belt and pushes forward steadily by using the technique he practiced he becomes Champion but aore knows there is always potential to improve K uh my wrestling today wasn’t great I will try harder in the next tournament the Ukrainian high schooler will continue to push himself to fulfill his Sumo dream one bout at a time
