this little village in the French Alps has been turned into a river bed a torrent swept through it carrying water rocks and gravel rushing down the mountain and engulfing houses tearing away at their walls all roads have been destroyed meaning residents had to be evacuated by helicopter it was 5:00 a.m. on Friday when the torrent tore through this bridge and flooded the Hamlet 4 km away the river is creeping ever closer to people’s homes cutting off the electricity Supply we suspected something terrible was going to happen because we’re used to the river overflowing but last night we could hear the sound of rocks being carried all the way to our house in neighboring Switzerland too residents are experiencing the consequences of extreme rainfall the famous mountain resort of zermat is also cut off from the rest of the world rainfall and melting snow caused the river visper to burst its banks turning it into a muddy torrent roads are in accessible and train Services have been halted we always monitor the weather forecast but Friday was extraordinary the rain just didn’t stop we couldn’t rely on the forecast every time we checked it the situation looked different for now the rain has stopped and people have emerged to inspect the damage authorities say the situation is now stable but the efforts are not over yet

  1. Would it be helpful to have autonomous quad copter fly in and out quickly to rescue people (I guess it really need 5G or 6G wireless to be safe and responsive, should remote pilot needed or required)?

  3. so they have experienced it in the past, it wasn't the first time. Looks like the housings are just in the pathway of the previous water flow. Just building a dam/bridge isn't going to hold the force of nature.

  10. With the right extreme rain conditions, pretty much anywhere that was formed by an alluvial flow is vulnerable to similar flooding. Yes, trolls and tin foil hat types, there have been 1000 year floods before. But their frequency is increasing.
