What Russia’s latest missile attacks says about Ukraine’s air defense systems | DW News

meanwhile the UN Security Council has held an emergency meeting in response to the missile strike on Ukraine’s biggest Children’s Hospital we heard about it earlier Russian diplomats have denied responsibility for the blast and ke which came during the largest wave of Russian attacks in months Ukrainian officials say Moscow deliberately targeted the hospital meanwhile in keev people are still coming to grips with the scale of the destruction day two of the cleanup at Ukraine’s largest Children’s Hospital hundreds of patients their loved ones and staff were in the facility when the Missile hit on Monday the facility’s director explained the impact of the strike the most significant loss is the loss of life unfortunately we lost a highly professional Doctor Who was very dedicated to children and prevented major casualties we lost a young qualified specialist as well of course we also lost the building it’s completely destroyed dialysis for kidney failure and acute toxicity was conducted in that building now there’s no building left and no equipment we also lost critical infrastructure we lost the ability to supply electricity to both the new and old buildings Ukraine has published photos of what it says are recovered fragments of a Russian cruise missile that struck the Children’s Hospital Russia denies its involvement un experts back up ke’s claims that Moscow was to blame hospitals have special protection under International humanitarian law intentionally directing attacks against a protected hospital is a war crime and perpet must be held to account Mr President these incidents are part of a deeply concerning Parton of systemic attacks harming health care and other civilian infrastructure across Ukraine the hospital strike was part of a barrage of missile attacks in different parts of Ukraine on Monday dozens of people were killed the Ukrainian president vowed to retaliate on Tuesday Moscow says Ukrainian drone strikes killed at least one person set fire to two power substations and an oil Depot in several Russian regions back in keev There’s Hope the NATO Summit in Washington will lead to an increase in support for Ukraine and in turn better air defenses to avoid more Bloodshed and we can get more on this from military analyst Marina [ __ ] from King’s College London hi Marina now the the Kremlin is claiming that the Children’s Hospital in keev was hit by fragments of a Ukrainian air defense missile the UN and the Ukrainian secret service say it was a Russian missile what more can you tell us about this good day Ana it is too soon to tell what exactly happened and I think that what is required is an international investigation team that’s impartial in order to be able to determine in order to be able ble to look at the destruction to look at the fragments to look at um at the people who were around the facility to interview them so I think there is no simple answer to that and of course the accountable person should be found because we’re talking about Russia and Ukraine so State actors but we need to look much deeper than that who in the chain of command was responsible for um for that strike who gave the order was it based on on false intelligence so I I I think that it’s much more complicated than it appears to be on in in the first place and I believe either way the International Community has a responsibility to ensure that there is proper protection for civilians in any War okay so an investigation still needed but obviously the damage is huge what does this tell us about Ukraine’s air defense systems well this is problematic because the Ukrainian side believed that they had sufficient air defenses in order to protect Kiev and that shows a huge vulnerability Gap um when it comes to protecting the capital meaning that uh president zansky might be requesting more um aerod defense batteries from NATO specifically because the Summit is um now about to take place so I think um NATO leaders will have to think about how to better support Ukraine at least when it comes to the short term given the fact that the Russians still have enough capabilities to conduct long range strikes and will certainly use this Gap in air defenses in order to strike different targets including those located in the cities including the capital speaking of the NATO Summit that is uh coming up in Washington how significant is the timing of this attack coming up coming just before uh the NATO Summit well I think it’s pretty significant U from what it looks like so right right now the International Community is condemning Russia as I said investigation should be conducted in order to find out what happens but a as it seems um the ational leaders will probably want to support Kev more than they have specifically because um this NATO Summit is supposed to discuss what is going to happen with Ukraine and prepare for a possibility of Donald Trump winning the US elections which would be um a huge blow for NATO and a possible blow to Ukraine as well so they might be looking at delivering more or pledging more Aid to Kev before the US presidential elections and I think these strikes play in in into the whole picture showing that Ukraine cannot withstand the Russian attacks without outside support and that support is needed urgently military analyst Marina [ __ ] from King’s College London Marina thank you thank you for having me Let’s cross over to DW’s Nick connley in Ukraine’s Capital ke Nick emergency workers have been digging through the rubble at the Children’s Hospital have there been any new signs of survivors Terry there was a report overnight of a young boy who was found in the rubble dead so far no good news since we were there last night um it is incredibly difficult work very very heavy concrete uh slabs that are basically having to be drilled through to get to what is believed to be the cellar underneath that unit of the hospital where people are believed to have been sheltered it is also incredibly difficult to tell quite how many people they should be looking for at this point because this was an air raid people have five or 10 minutes maximum to get to safety so no one really knows who went where and which potential kind of air raid shelter they were in overall we have those figures from yesterday 27 people believed killed in Kiev alone more than 100 wounded those figures expected still to rise so it is a pretty suble morning here in Keva day of morning um concerts any other kind of entertainment uh is banned for today and um people once again pretty painfully aware of quite how vulnerable they are even here in Ukraine’s Capital the place that is the best protected in all the country well following that wave of Russian attacks on Ukraine nick uh Ukraine’s president balinski he promised retaliation what more can you tell us about that so we had a message that was a post by Ukraine internal security agenc sbu which also has been carrying out operations in Russia since the beginning of this war saying very clearly that they knew not only who had carried out these attacks referring to pilots and the crews that programmed the Cruis missiles but also the people with the responsibility for giving these commands people further up uh the food chain as it were within the Russian military they knew their names and where they lived we have seen uh attacks and assassinations of people on Russian territory those are for now largely been ukrainians who’ve then gone to collaborate with the Russian side and gone to live in Russia but also uh Russian military uh Personnel have been uh shot and assassinated in various ways on Russian territory so that is the expectation that going forward that might be something that Ukraine would try to do and certainly a message to try and intimidate and remind Uh Russian Crews air Crews and also the kind of support staff that Ukraine unlike Russia is pretty good at projecting power behind the front lines they have lots of uh people who Russians who maybe are sympathetic to Ukraine also uh Ukrainian expats people who live in Russia who are able to provide information so um they are trying to really uh make it clear that this has a cost and that this is not something that Ukraine is simply going to move on from and forget the Russian strikes came on the eve of a NATO Summit in the US Nick Ukraine’s president is due to attend that Summit do you do the attacks lend weight to Vladimir zin’s appeal for more Allied support well from a Ukrainian perspective there is this kind of depressing tendency that it takes pictures of the magnitude and of the kind of awfulness of what we saw yesterday at this Children’s Hospital to really move perceptions and to accelerate decision- making in kind of Western Government bureaucracies uh there were posts from we had a ministers from the Netherlands who are providing Patriot spare parts and also those F16 jets that Ukraine so desperately needs also to shoot down missiles saying that they would double down on their efforts to send things faster we had uh American government spokespeople saying there would be a clear signal a kind of response from Washington uh to Putin after yesterday’s attacks orbe it no change on the position that for now Ukraine is only allowed to use Us weapons against Russian territory in a kind of 100 km Border strip not allowed to use us supplied weapons to attack for instance Russian airfields that are used to launch attacks on Ukraine so that’s still disappointment from Ukraine but hope here that now slowly this country is going to get more of those Patriot systems that have proved so important in defending Ukrainian cities but which you know currently they only have a handful of them which means when they do shoot down missiles they’re shooting down missiles over cities and debris is falling on people’s heads at Great danger those people going about their daily business Nick thank you very much our correspondent Nick Connelly there in Kei

  1. Russia should NOT be on the Security Council! It is a slap in the face to all the UN stands for! Russia lies and lies! Of course Russia is responsible!! It is much too much damage for a fragment! The guest is wrong! This has been going on for two and a half years!!

  2. question. Will this make Ukrainians lose the will to fight after this? is the loss of Ukrainian lives & potentially their own make them buckle? or will it invigorate them to heed the call to arms to defend their home and maybe die doing so?

  3. No western criticism or condemnation when Ukrainians killed innocent Russian tourists and children by US made ATACM rocket on the beach of Sevastopol just a week ago!! More than 120 people injured and 4 or more killed. No single western news showed or told about it. No single news about bombing Donetsk and Belgorod. You can never expect Western media to give unbiased views on Russia and Eastern countries. For many countries now the Western media and its ratings agencies have become irrelevant. "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." Business as usual in American media bias and its bias media rating agency allies, sadly!!
Keep an open mind, question everything when they speak about the truth!

  4. PUTIN MUST PUNISH SEVERELY OF WHAT HAPPENED TO KYIV BIGGEST CHILDRENS HOSPITAL IN UKRAINE WHICH MANY CHILDRENS, AND CIVILIANS DIED. US AND NATO MUST ACT NOW AND PUNISH PUTIN AND HIS RUSSIAN MILITARY AND RUSSIAN LEADERS.

  5. Zelensky didn't try to prevent the conflict through diplomacy because he lacks honor and integrity.

In 2014 there was a coup. Soon after, there was a massacre in Odessa (dozens of people were burned alive). Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed. A civil war broke out due to the rise in ethnic tensions. For 8 years the Ukrainian military was indiscriminately shelling civilians living in Donbas.

If Zelensky honored the Minsk agreement and pledged neutrality, none of this would have happened. The 8 year civil war would have ended and Donbas would have remained part of Ukraine. War is the ultimate failure of diplomacy.

Zelensky admitted that Ukraine had no intention to honor the Minsk agreements.

Who didn't want peace? Who advised against the 2022 peace talks in April? Hint: someone visited Zelensky in Kiev at that time

Russia's national security was compromised once NATO began to expand eastwards. Russia clearly stated that Ukraine joining NATO was a red line (November 2021) and unfortunately this concern was never taken seriously. The Russians openly stated: if nothing changes, we will be forced to act in order to defend our national security. Enhancing the national security of one country at the expense of another is unacceptable. The Russians have legitimate security concerns.

20th September, 2021: Ukraine launched military drills with US and NATO.

NATO is not a defensive alliance. NATO illegally bombed Yugoslavia (a direct violation of the U.N. Charter).
We should never forget what they did to Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq etc.

Who blew up the pipeline causing an environmental disaster?

Zelensky banned all opposition and arrested a leading priest.

Zelensky tried to invoke article 5 under false pretenses. Remember the incident in Poland.

Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed.
Poroshenko said, “Our children will go to schools and kindergartens—theirs will hide in the basements”.

Russians will never forget the 2014 Odessa massacre. The whole world needs to know about it.

Why was Denis Kireev eliminated? He was a member of Ukraine's negotiating team during the peace negotiations. He wanted to help his country.

Ukraine has a hit list. They target artists, journalists and ordinary citizens. Hundreds of children are on this list. 13 year old Faina Savenkova was placed on this list.
Pink Floyd's Roger Waters is on this list. Jimmy Dore (American stand-up comedian, podcaster) and Aaron Maté (Canadian writer and journalist) are on this list.

There is evidence that Ukrainian troops have been indiscriminately shelling civilians in Donbas (they used petal mines and targeted areas where there was no military presence).

The azov troops trapped in the azovstal steelworks in Mariupol used human shields. They refused to allow civilians to leave despite of humanitarian corridors being present.
Russia held a proposed cease fire in order for the civilians to leave, but azov would not allow the civilians to leave.

Ukraine has committed many acts of terrorism (car bombs and other forms of assassination). Darya Dugina (journalist) R.I.P.

The first terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed the truck driver and the individuals in the adjacent car (innocent civilian victims).
The second terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed two parents and severely injured their young daughter.

I have done a lot of research and it took me a long time to write this comment. I have stated a lot of facts and I have given my honest opinion.
I have provided a brief summary of events that took place. In order to explain this whole situation in great detail, a book would need to be written.
Hopefully someone will write an UNBIASED book, stating facts and allowing the readers to form their own judgments. Everything I said can be fact checked and verified.

  6. UKRAINE is playing with a NATION which is Highly Specialized in Warfare weapons systems….by relying ONLY on imports 😂…If Russian wants there will be NO UKRAINE tomorrow morning…you all guys should know that….why play with RUSSIA..& get battered 😂😂

  7. these western channels dont realise that no one believes their propoganda except the dumbed down portions of their captive audiences. all they are achieving is a loss of credibility. as ususal, in the name of inclusivity, the western lobby in the UN gets speakers and directors from banana republics who no one takes seriously and can be bought cheap and easy. only stooge western community is condemning russia.

  8. Another meeting for show that won't change anything. Putin can do whatever he wants because he has too many supporters in Europe and around the world who hate the West and its values. The UN will once again confirm its complete helplessness and uselessness (like the League of Nations before World War II). No wonder the world is heading for another disaster.

  9. You guys forgot the part where the "Russian missile strike" was carried out with a Ukrainian AIM-120 AMRAAM. Funny how the only proof NAFOS has is a manipulated screenshot.

  10. Kh missiles are subsonic. Super slow! If Ukraine "shoots down" Kinzhal Hypersonic missiles, how would Kh go through?
