  1. Some highlights

    > Vincent Kompany is working under bright lights at Bayern Munich. Appointed after the convoluted search for Thomas Tuchel’s successor, Kompany has arrived at Sabener Strasse with immediate scepticism, not with the goodwill typically afforded a new appointment.

    > Bayern are almost a week into pre-season and there are positives. Kompany, 38, has been an authoritative and commanding presence in his sessions. He has been quick to dictate how he wants his drills to run and happy to stop and teach where necessary. Some of Bayern’s most senior players are still on holiday, but Kompany has no intention of being timid in his new job or deferring too many of the coaching tasks to assistants.

    > A year ago, Tuchel was howling about the need for a defensive midfielder, beginning a storyline that would become a significant source of tension. To hear Kompany distance himself from that conversation is to watch him pitch himself as an anti-Tuchel, of sorts. It’s a contrast that has not been missed.

    > Kompany has made a strong start. The quality of his communication and instruction, which has been given in German and English, has impressed players, members of staff and the media. His stress for the need for hard work has won the approval of club elders, including honorary president Uli Hoeness, whose favour is always essential.

  2. Hit them with the Beethoven special, just to play Can Can at the end.

  3. Shut down Uli and we’re getting a calmer club, which can better operate too.

  4. I think he’ll smash it. What he was doing at Burnley was never going to work in the prem, but I think it will work for a big team.
