This is kinda BS tho, you showed Soviet Union but not West Germany/Germany. I think Germany would be comfortably 3rd/4th in the standings
**Summer Olympics only
I don’t see it changing too much anytime soon except China overtaking GB
Australia is tenth? We’re punching well above our weight. Get in! Fucking legends
I hate to do it. I’m not nationalistic in the least, but, USA USA USA 🪨🇺🇲🦅

RAHHHHHHHHHHHH
USA USA USA
Y’all can’t compete with the USA
Did we have data for 1990 year?
I’ve projected 37 golds for the U.S. in these Olympics:
13-Athletics
9-Swimming
3-Basketball
3-Gymnastics
2-Fencing
2-Wrestling
1-Cycling
1-Golf
1-Surfing
1-Weightlifting
1-Water Polo
Will be interesting to see if i get any projections exactly right.
I wonder what the ranking would look like if athletes who doped weren’t take in account and if there are still any without juicing left
We’re third all time? Rule fucking Britannia 🤣
No way are we third??? Go Team GB!! 🇬🇧
Nobody gonna talk about Hungary, having been a poor communist country for a large part of Olympics history being in the top 10 with a population of 10 million?
All time? Surely Greece should be a lot higher then…
I don’t see Ireland 🙁
We must be 11th or 12th 🙂
Team GB third considering our small size and higher than China 💪
Hungary is the most impressive from this list 😎
Is this summer and winter combined?
the us is so dominant
Australia the ultimate bronze medal heroes
PRC has only been in properly since 84 in the summer games and maybe 80 in the winter games.
Hungary are punching, good on them
Curious how this deals with the change in countries.. For example, USSR was several countries before USSR, including russia, and then after the break-up. Is Russia also counted? What about Belarus for example?
How the fuck did Hungary get that many?
Soviet Union, I thought you guys broke up?
obligatory

I would love to see someone create an XY scatter chart of countries based on total population and per capita GDP, to see how much those factors correlate to overall Olympic success.
Almost all Olympic sports don’t pay enough for athletes to make a full-time living off earnings and prize money alone. Which means the upper-hand in the medal standings belongs to countries that can provide more athletes with endorsement and sponsorship opportunities so they can train and practice full time (especially in the medal-rich sports like Athletics and Swimming).
Not enough Winter Olympic medals for Norway 🙁
Anybody got those stats but per capita? The US being first is no surprise but Hungary being so high is insane
Fun fact in the 1904 Olympic soccer tournament there were 3 teams entered, 2 from the US one from Canada, US got gold and bronze.
If you add West Germany (of which todays Germany is the direct successor) and the german team after WW2 before it was split in East and West German teams, Germany is exactly 1 gold medal in front of the UK
UK punching well above its weight
Why’d I figure Brazil would be on here
They not gonna like this one cuz
Finland is number 14 with only 5 million people, but our last gold was in 2008…
Obviously didn‘t count the GDRs medals for Germany.
Are all countries represented equally? Or does less population generally mean less Olympic athletes
What is it:
1) per capita income
2) proportion of population
Is there a similar table with per capita medals? Surely that’s a more accurate assessment of achievement?
This might be a stupid question, and I’m
from the UK, but why do we have such a good medal total in comparison to our population size? Similar to France, Italy, Germany and Hungary. Is the infrastructure just good enough to produce a lot of talent or something?
*Sigh*
We really need to up the sports budget
Why is the soviet union in this?
Hungary is the superstar at the list
crazy that the uk is third with only a small population stg we different
