Crowning Glories: The Royal Family’s Love of Hats Through the Years

The Royal Family are known worldwide for their iconic sense of style and timeless fashion sense through the decades, from dazzling ball gowns to stylish suits that are synonymous with high profile royal events.

But the House of Windsor is also known for one other thing, their regal taste in hats.

During her 70 year reign on the throne Queen Elizabeth II was rarely seen without a hat, headpiece or fascinator. Her majesty’s personal style with hats gradually developed over time, often spanning elegance to extravagance.

Princess Margaret was no stranger to hats. Often sporting a range of stylish to avant garde headwear that made her stand out from the crowd.

Princess Diana’s timeless sense of style became her calling card across the globe. However, her love of millinery reflected her impeccable fashion sense at the time, opting for striking shapes and vivid aesthetics with her headwear.

Today’s royal family has carried on the legacy of eye-catching hats into the 21st century.

Princess Anne’s personal style is a stark departure from that of her mother, Princess Margaret. The Princess Royal can often be seen wearing smart and functional hats, very much reflecting her steadfast attitude towards her royal duties.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie caught the attention of the world with their memorable millinery moment at William and Kate’s wedding.

Princess Catherine has regularly stolen the show with her hats, cutting an image of royal splendour with an unmistakable sense of fun.
