Ukraine and Russia exchange first prisoners since Kursk invasion

Russia and Ukraine announced Saturday they had exchanged 115 prisoners of war each, just over two weeks after Kyiv launched a surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said “another 115 of our defenders have returned home today”, while Moscow’s defence ministry said: “As a result of a negotiation process, 115 Russian servicemen taken prisoner in the Kursk region have been returned from territories controlled by the Kyiv regime.”

Mr Zelensky previously said the Russian soldiers captured in the Kursk region are considered an “exchange fund”, and that he hopes they can be swapped for some of the roughly 6,5000 Ukrainian soldiers that Moscow says it holds.

    As yet the Red Cross has been unable to enter any prison in Russia but has access to all prisons in Ukraine.

  2. The Russian and Ukrainian leaders should start peace talks to find a peaceful solution. The reality is that the West is only fueling the fire for its own benefit and profit. It is not a friend to anyone other than the 5Es. Europe also needs to think deeply and protect itself.

    Update on the conflict in Ukraine for August 25, 2024…

    – Western media admits Ukraine has dangerously overextended itself through its Kursk incursion;

    – Western media claims Russia is unable to use glide bombs in Kursk because of poor “air-control systems,” however, glide bombs are used primarily to break heavy fortifications which the Western media admits Ukraine is not building in Kursk;

    – Despite claims that Russia’s response was “disjointed,” Ukraine’s Kursk operation has become a liability, costing it irreversibly lost territory along the actual line of contact;

    – The more territory Ukraine attempts to hold in Kursk, the more troops and equipment it must divert from the actual line of contact;

    – Western media reports admit that Russian progress in the Donbass has accelerated since the Kursk incursion began;

    – Ukraine is not building the type of fortifications required to hold onto Kursk in the long-term with Western officials/analysts admitting that once Russia brings in sufficient reinforcements, uprooting Ukraine is inevitable;

    – US military assistance to Ukraine continues to shrink, with the most recent package featuring the same items (without quantities noted) as previous packages, suggesting the US is drawing from its insufficient monthly production.

  10. I suspect that men like these Ukrainians are the reason why Putin will fail.

    Because Putin does not fight from the heart. He fights from Anger and Fear and Hate and Greed.

    But these men fought from Love. They don't fight to expand their kingdom or their wealth. They fought to protect their only life that they have. None of them got rich plundering Russia. Most probably have lost all that they had back home, now in occupied Ukraine.

    But they put a severe price tag on the conquest of Ukraine. And that is why Russia is dying internally as a country and barely able to hang on to their tiny incremental gains of the past 10 months. Because the Ukrainians make the Russians pay, and pay, and pay for every little sector of forest and every little farm village and every bloc apartment and street in the big towns and cities.

  11. It wasn't an equal swap of prisoners. Those 115 Ukrainians were in fighting spirit and strength equal to 1150 Russians.

    Don't tell Putin that He thinks he got 115 Russians back that he can throw back into the fight. But really he got back about the equivalent to 15 Ukrainians.
