  1. The affair surrounding his cocaine use is one of my oldest conscious football-related memories. As a young Bayern fan, my sympathies were of course clearly decided at the time, even though I honestly had no real idea what it was all about, and with my maturity today I would probably take a more differentiated view of the story. To this day, I occasionally ask myself how German football history would have turned out if the story hadn’t happened back then, and he had become national coach as planned. I’m always reminded of an interview statement from an old DSF documentary about the case, in which an interviewee, whose identity I’ve unfortunately forgotten, firmly claimed that the Klinsmann/Löw era would never have happened because Daum would have done the job for so long.

I was very surprised that the news came out this way, even though his illness was known, but AFAIK he was still publicly active until recently and wrote columns for 11Freunde, among other things.

And I got to be honest, him and Willy Lemke dying within two weeks from one another does make me somewhat curious as to what is going on in Uli’s mind right now.

  2. Wow.. just a few months ago he told the Doppelpass his treatment went well and he feels good.

  3. alot of German football legends from my youth are dying.. Beckenbauer, Daum, Lemke. This guy’s were omnipresent in the great buli era around the millennium. makes me sad and it feels weired.
