German Chancellor Scholz calls for renewed efforts to end the war in Ukraine | DW News

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for diplomatic efforts to be stepped up to end the war in Ukraine. Historic gains by populists from both the right and left in recent regional elections have increased pressure on Scholz’s governing coalition on multiple fronts. The far-right party Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) and the new Sarah Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) have opposed weapons shipments to Ukraine. A series of Islamist attacks in Germany have seen politicians lean into stereotyping of migrants, prompting many voters to demand stricter immigration policies and ramp up deportations.

  5. Dieser Scholz ist wirklich schwer zu verstehen. Es ist allgemein bekannt, dass Putin den Krieg schon vor Jahren verloren hat, wie der am besten informierte Mensch, Präsident Biden, damals sagte. Nach Angaben mehrerer Experten starb er nicht lange danach, da er an mehreren Krebsarten und der Parkinson-Krankheit litt. Und Kanzler Scholz will mit einem Gefallenen verhandeln.

  17. Scholts is a hypocrite, first, he wanted war and migration, but now that he sees that Germany is already on the brink of catastrophe.

  20. Olaf, you do know ruzzia only obeys force, right? The reason the has drawn out so much is the fact, that all western countries, including Germany, have not provided enough support to Ukraine in a timely manner. Also, almost all western countries are restricting Ukraine in how the weapons they've provided can be used. So Ukraine is basically fighting one hand behind it's back with half a clip of ammo all the time.

    Funny thing is, we STILL haven't learned the lesson. We're still repeating our mistakes in supporting Ukraine.

  26. We've been saying "peace", "negotiations", "stop arming Elensky", but they wanted eternal war until "Russia is defeated". What happened to helping Ukraine as long as it takes? We knew that only negotiations will end this war, but they wanted Ukraine to win, has Ukraine won now?

  35. The problem, obviously, is not cheap gas and oil, the problem is, it is Russian gas and oil.
    Of course, some of the same gas and oil is bought from a third party( India, or Belgium),
    but, at least Americans as are happy, because they are robbing Germany blind because
    companies are moving to the USA, and Germany has to pay many times more for American
    LNG gas that is now being held back as a means for additional political pressure, as if blowing
    up Nordstream pipeline was not enough.

  36. Finally, Scholz found some sense. Biden dragged Germany and France into this war. They had no problems with Putin and had great trade relations with Russia. Biden F___d everything up. He has a history of that. The U.S. bullied them into war after destroying the Nordstream pipeline. Their cheap energy ended and had to buy nat. gas from the U.S. for much higher prices. That sent Germany's manufacturing sector in recession. Ukraine is mostly destroyed now. Thank you Biden and America!!

  41. What he means is Ukrain has to make territorial concessions to please the imperialistic hunger of putin. Our support for Ukraine remains steadfast. We don't bow to terrorists.

  48. they thought they will break Russia with sanctions and plunder it like it was 90s on steroids but that didn't happen..all it ensured is US MIC make a ton of money and Europe falls further behind..
    pray China doesn't retaliate for your economic hubris or our continent will sink into oblivion…
