The stakes behind Ukraine’s surprise attack inside Russian territory

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is gambling that his surprise attack into Russia can convince Vladimir Putin to negotiate an end to the 2½-year-old war which has produced an estimated one million casualties. But Putin’s forces continue to rely on the sheer weight of numbers to grind Ukraine down, and Zelenskyy must depend on America’s deeply divided politics for the aid which he needs to stave off Russian assaults on his front lines and air attacks against his cities. CBS News national security correspondent David Martin talks with former Joint Chiefs Chairman Mark Miley about the stakes.

  1. Kursk: What a folly for the Ukrainians. They are wasting thousands of troops in order to attack territory they won't be able to hold on to.

  2. What military purpose did this gamble carry?Aside from capturing a nuclear power station in that area – there is none. The station wasnt captured. Time to pull out and seek peace.

  3. From opinion polls, I get the message almost 50% of the voters is probably voting Trump. Suppose he wins, I hope that he will continue to support Ukraine. If he doesn't, what use is it to think about stopping China's world dominance. In any case, we have to support the rule of law, and although Ukraine still has a lot of work to do to battle corruption, please recognize how far they've come. I'm shocked about too many anti-Ukraine / pro-Trump remarks below this video. BTW, I'm Dutch, and I've been supporting Ukrainian refugees here in the Netherlands.

  4. Stalemate? Russia has one fifth of Ukraine now and are taking more territory everyday until they reach Odessa. Where is the stalemate in this?

  5. The people who are the main threat to the US reside in Washington. They're the ones who are constantly pushing us towards war.

  6. This is one of the many news sources that claimed that the 2023 summer counteroffensive would result in the end of the war and Putin's removal. They didn't even get through the first line of defense. CBS is a propaganda outlet.

  7. Check out the initial explosion. Like a small nuke. It seems odd a single drone or missile with conventional explosives could make a 2.5 earth quake. Just my opinion. Mushroom 🍄 cloud and major after shock not normal. 😮

  8. 4:36 I don’t like this general talking about the Ukrainian conflict, they told like getting the Russian wins the fight and underestimate theUkrainian service men, actually they were running away from Ukraine when they saw the Russian getting close to Kiev, now that the Ukrainians are inside Russia territory the only things they wants is a nuclear weapon explosion. So this is a bad energy for the Ukrainian military. Here those so called generals don’t know how to win anything in this modern time. They just not have the bolls to secure a conflict after all it is about uniforms and con-decorations.

  9. This "expert" is now commenting on problems he was instrumental is causing pretending he's always just been the observer…. and offering the same advice that contributed to the allowing the problems to fester and grow. That's rich….

  10. Products of russian military industry have become so toxic that the Kremlin is not only losing traditional defense customers but also some of the niche markets it dominated for decades. The latest example is Nigeria, which, despite having an active contract for twelve Mi-35 attack helicopters — a deal russia claims is "partially fulfilled" but Nigerian officials describe as delayed — is now turning to another supplier: India.

  11. I don't care what anyone says Russia takes a big risk shooting missiles at NATO countries not saying he won't……….but NATO is 100 times stronger Ukraine

  12. In order for US to win this war and punish Russia for trading with UK. She needs to put boots on the ground. The Grand Armee can never be defeated.

  13. It’s hard to see what military objective this accomplishes. The land cannot be held and from what reports are out there there was really no military to defeat in Kursk. It appears Ukraine used forces to take land they do not need and will have trouble holding through a winter. It’s land they cannot settle or utilize for any economic purpose, either. It’s hard to see the logic of this offensive.
