EU vs X: Why the platform faces a potential ban and large financial penalties in Europe | DW News

The social-media platform X has been blocked in Brazil for weeks. Owner Elon Musk has refused to comply with legislation requiring a legal representative in the country. He’s called it a “hostage law” that would allow Brazil to jail his employee if it disapproved of content on the platform. Now, X is also facing scrutiny in Europe over its practices.

  1. Elon has shut his mouth over the past few days because he is being investigated by the Secret Service for threatening the current Vice President and a candidate running to become President in Twitter posts he posted last week.

Screw Musk. An immigrant from South Africa who brought Twitter in America and now because Trump has promised Elon a high profile position in Trump's administration if he is elected Elon is trying to use AI and his Twitter platform to influence the American election.

And I know Elon changed the name from Twitter to Y but screw Musk.

  2. I sincerely hope they do bankrupt X. The platform has been turned into a cesspit of misinformation, disinformation, bigotry, and conspiracy theories. Let Brazil be an example to all that just because Musk has money, does not mean we must listen to him nor do what he wishes. There are laws and regulations for a reason, and we are also well overdue laws that regulate social media spaces.

  3. I'm not sure EU will be able to ban X (or any other platform) in effect. Other countries (such as China and Iran) have already done that but their populations have learned to use VPN technologies in a very effective way to go around the ban. As a result, most businesses in Iran (as an example) have an official page on X and openly market their products and services there and people inside the country use X to share contents. So, it seems to me that Europeans are son going to learn these techniques.

  4. Elon Musk is a danger to democracy just like Trump, it’s best to curtail him and his powerful X now. The world doesn’t need X and needs to be resolved. Musk is a wannabe political leader and will use x for his own political ambitions.

  5. Sure hope so. Hate speech and intentional misinformation is prohibited and rightfully so. Furthermore, people CAN sue others in Europe for defamation and insults. Time for the U.S. to fix this as well. Hate speech should NEVER be protected by the 1st Amendment.

  6. When did people start to think that some billionaire is above the law because he says some edgy meme lord bs on the internet and supports trump?

  7. The EU is showing itself to be a totalitarian neo fascist corrupt dystopia. Why are they so afraid of an open "town square" media forum? What they are doing with censorship, and X, is sickening, and will come back to bite them in time, as it already has with how they "dealt with" the pandemic: they're regressing socially, technologically and economically.

  8. Musk is like a spoilt child with a toy. Twitter is his, and he will break it if he wants to.
His megalomania makes him think he can boss the EU. He needs to go easy on the drugs IMO

  9. Elon and Trump…..they both need to be brought down to earth . Trump might be done very soon if he loses . Heaven help the USA if he wins !
Elon will be tougher to deal with . He’s the new Murdoch x a million.
