Can Sri Lanka’s new leftist President Dissanayake root out corruption? | DW News

Sri Lanka has sworn in a new left leaning president following an election that took place on Saturday.
The newly elected leader, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has vowed to bring ‘clean’ politics as the country recovers from a deep economic crisis. Dissanyake has positioned himself as the challenger to the status quo and is widely seen by analysts as a clear rejection of entrenched corruption and cronyism that have long afflicted the country.

  1. That's the best definition.he's center left. Not far left .Please give him some time to work and show his his style .Because more analysis causes paralysis. He's not lean to neither India nor China.

  2. Thank you Rasika for clearly laying the point to the world. I do agree with the comments saying Anura is a center left. The JVP had Marxist ideology. Anura learned and grew up through that political era and now, he's the leader us Sri Lankans need for our country. His victory was a result of a long evolving political and social revolution in Sri Lanka. This is why majority of Sri Lankan who'd been so disappointed with the country's situation are feeling positively hopeful now.

  3. Of course he's a leftist and a communist. Things will change in a better way in the future. Specially regarding pollution and man made environmental desasters communism must be established. More greenhouse gasses come from most developed countries, don't forget.

  4. Rasika Jayakodi , ha ha , another supporter of the corrupt. Why the he'll these foreign media cannot find an independent analyst ?? Also he is not left or right . He is the best man for the job. He is the cleanest man you can find on politics.

  5. I don't care which political position he is been with but now we need a clean politician to clear our government corruptions. He is the best choice for us because he is being clean for 35 years now. no corruptions.

  6. AKD is the leader the nation has long sought, elected by the majority of well-educated citizens. This is not a statement of discrimination, but rather an acknowledgment that the poor and honest rural communities have been deceived by corrupt politicians since independence in 1948

  7. In the inception the Incoming President’s Party formed on Marxist principles but the party he leads now is somewhat a socialist Coalition though he himself is a moderate

  8. Anura Kumara is a Talented, Educated, Genuine, Ordinary, Clean man to Lead Sri Lanka. people loves and trusting him, in the meantime the corrupt politician, under world, drug cartels fearing him to the core, they very knows there will be no escape, currently Sri Lankan system correcting itself automatically. That's i call the power of a true leader, i never thought this gonna happen in my life time.

  9. Indian media claim that Anura is a far-leftist president seems more like an attempt to discredit him rather than an accurate portrayal of his political stance. It's likely that the current Indian government is pushing this narrative out of fear that Indian citizens could be inspired by the movements in neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Labeling leaders as "far-left" could be a tactic to create fear and discourage any potential uprisings or demands for change.

  10. Whether he’s far left or centre left he’s got a chance to save the country. Hopefully, he will prison the Rajapaksa brothers and hold them accountable for corrupting the country and making the people poor.

  11. The corrupt will root out Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara sooner than later.
Every newly elected leaders get elected on the promises and pledges to eradicate corruption but most end up being corrupted

  12. Homies please understand the new president of Sri Lanka is not far left or typical left party leader. Their alliance and ideology is based on Social Democracy. Anura (The President) and his team clearly support democracy and right wing ideologies. So it's better to say the new president and the government is almost like western countries mixed ideology… 😉♥️

  13. If the people really cared about the country they would have waited till we overcame the current economic crisis before going for more elections.

  14. Majority of population, nearly 70 percent voted for regime change and NPP won majority of vote for change.

  15. He got 40 out of 100, rest of the 60 is accepting the old fashion…He will be facing lot of challenges during the time period. Because he do not have experienced team to perform…because they are good only saying "all are corrupted"…I have doubt, How he is gonna make a majority in the parliament….when I asked his supporters, why you are going to vote him, they say "deela balamu (try him once)"😅…We have four years and I think we will see lot of funny stuff like 2015-2022 time period….Pls god save Sri Lanka

  16. He's as far left as they come. For example, their election manifesto speaks about maintaining racial quotas in specific areas. I mean that's just too much for even Kamala.

  17. This "far left" "far right" bs is mostly in western politics. In Sri Lanka there are conservative and liberal politicians in every party mixed together

  18. Misinformation everywhere! Regret to see from leading media !!! AKD is a center-left NPP (not merely JVP) party leader whose also to promote democracy & reformist as well, not a Marxist…

  19. He is center left above all he is a patriotic leader
He is the best option srilanka has now without a doubt

  20. You may not believe but he's been working for this purpose since he was 17 yrs old. He has a very strong sense of right and wrong and an exceptional leader. He is the man for the job. In just few days, country is turning around
