“It could go down as the greatest day of Felipe’s reign,” Oriol Bartomeus, a political science professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, told The Associated Press.

“If he had sought protection from his bodyguards and run away, now that would have been the darkest day of his reign. Instead he showed why he is king, demonstrating composure and serenity, and by getting as close as he could to the people.”

  1. Only time will tell if them staying while they were pelted with mud and objects and had insults thrown at them, is a good thing or a bad thing. History judges iconic moments, it’s far too early to say this.

  2. Well, it is accurate that the politicians who botched the disaster response ran for cover, while the King absorbed the anger of his people, in this case for something in which he had no responsibility. Felipe inherited nothing but mess and has done the best he could with it. Only time will tell if it has been enough.
