SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – An Israeli journalist spoke at Missouri State University Monday night about the continued conflict in the Middle East.
Gershom Gorenburg, a Missouri-born journalist and historian who has lived in Israel since 1977, gave a speech inside MSU’s Karls Hall to encourage students and staff to stay informed about the Israel-Hamas war.
“I want people to understand that they should not have simple opinions about it,” said Gorenburg. “There’s much more to the history and there’s much more to the motivations of each side than are reflected on the slogans that get bounced around in America in general and on campuses in particular.”
Throughout his speech, Gorenburg talked about his experience being on the ground in Israel after the terrorist attack on Oct. 7 last year. He says that day is still an ongoing event.
“In a general sense, there is a tendency in American writing about the conflict to try to fit it into one analogy or another compared to some aspect of United States politics or society,“ Gorenburg said. ”And none of those comparisons work because it’s a different place, and the forces are different.”
Gorenburg has written four books on Middle Eastern history and politics. He is most notably known for his writings on the occupied territories within Israel.
