United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres informed Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides that all parties have agreed to proceed with plans for an expanded meeting on the Cyprus issue.
The expanded meeting, which aims to bring together key stakeholders, is seen as a crucial step toward resolving the Cyprus issue and fostering lasting peace in the region.
The discussion took place on the sidelines of the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, and followed up on discussions from an informal dinner held in October.
According to government sources cited by the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Guterres confirmed that the framework for the upcoming meeting was progressing as planned, with consensus from all involved parties.
He also noted that UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo will soon coordinate preparations for the event, underscoring Guterres’ commitment to achieving tangible results from the talks.
The development comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve long-standing divisions on the island, with the UN playing a pivotal role in facilitating dialogue.
During the COP29 conference, Christodoulides also met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to continue their discussions from the previous week’s meeting in Budapest.
