TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — Imprisoned Belarusian opposition activist Maria Kolesnikova is considering asking the country’s authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko for a pardon after more than four years behind bars, her father said Wednesday.
Alexander Kolesnikov spoke to The Associated Press a day after seeing his daughter at a prison near Gomel where the 42-year-old musician-turned-activist is serving her 11-year sentence. The meeting in the prison’s hospital took place after her family and friends had not heard anything from the popular and charismatic symbol of resistance for more than 20 months.

Donald Trump’s return to the White House has made many countries anxious and recalculating where they stand with the U.S., but India appears to be welcoming the change that may embolden nationalist leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Experts say a second Trump presidency is likely to play out in New Delhi’s favor. Modi seeks to reset India’s relationship with the West after recent frictions over his refusal to join sanctions against Russia or condemn its 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Mike Tyson isn’t in the mood for talking now that the 58-year-old former heavyweight champion’s fight with YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul is near. Tyson and Paul meet Friday night at the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. The issue of Tyson’s health didn’t come up at a news conference about 20 miles from AT&T Stadium. A bout originally scheduled for July 20 was postponed after Tyson had to be treated for a stomach ulcer when he fell ill on a flight. Officials say Tyson has been cleared medically and is undergoing checkups the same way any fighter would for a sanctioned bout in Texas.

Voting begins in Sri Lanka’s parliamentary election that is key for its new, Marxist-leaning president.
Sri Lankans are voting in a parliamentary election that’s key for their new, Marxist-leaning president to consolidate his party’s power and follow through on promises of economic recovery. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake won the September presidential election in a rejection of the traditional political parties that have governed Sri Lanka since its independence from British rule in 1948. But Dissanayake’s failure to get over 50% of the vote has fueled concerns about his party’s outlook in Thursday’s election. His National People’s Power party must increase its votes significantly — from the 42% it won in the presidential election — if it’s to get a minimum of 113 seats for control of the 225-member Parliament.
Former “Dances with Wolves” actor Nathan Chasing Horse is scheduled to stand trial on Jan. 13 in Las Vegas. It’s a major development in his sweeping sexual abuse case after more than a year of stalled court proceedings while he challenged it. Chasing Horse has pleaded not guilty to 21 felonies charging him with sexually abusing Indigenous women and girls. Prosecutors are now moving forward with their case after a grand jury again indicted Chasing Horse last month. His initial indictment was dismissed in September after the Nevada Supreme Court found that prosecutors abused the grand jury process, but the court said the charges could be refiled.
A tech consultant charged in Cash App founder Bob Lee’s stabbing death has testified that the famous entrepreneur suddenly attacked him in a rage. Nima Momeni said in court Wednesday that Lee pulled a knife on him after he tried to put an end to a late night of drinking and doing drugs. Momeni says he joked that Lee should spend his final night in San Francisco with family rather than trying to find a strip club to visit next. Prosecutors say Momeni planned the April 4, 2023, attack after a dispute over his younger sister. The defense says Lee was erratic and aggressive.

Min, a state senator, defeated Republican Scott Baugh, who came up short in the 2022 midterms against Porter. Min’s ads called Baugh an extremist who would endanger abortion rights. Republican ads, meanwhile, targeted Min for his support for criminal justice changes in California’s State Assembly. The Associated Press declared Min the winner at 8:19 p.m. EST.

An LSU student who is accused of threating to kill Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry has been arrested. Landry had successfully advocated for bringing a live tiger onto the field before a recent college football game. Twenty-one-year-old Jackson Pemberton, of Baton Rouge, posted on X, “I am going to kill you @jefflandry,” tagging the governor’s account. Media outlets cited an arrest affidavit in which Pemberton said the post was a joke. He told investigators he was upset about the tiger being brought to the game. Deommodore Lenoir’s NFL career didn’t get off to the greatest starts when he accidentally posted an offseason practice video on social media that led to a fine for the San Francisco 49ers and coach Kyle Shanahan for violating rules about no contact in practice. He also had problems on the field early as a rookie, allowing a long catch to Davante Adams that set up a game-winning field goal for Green Bay in his third career game that dealt a blow to his confidence. Lenoir has grown greatly from that inauspicious beginning, leading to a lucrative reward when he signed a five-year, $92 million contract extension.

He returned to the sideline in the second half with his legged wrapped and using crutches. Tests revealed his injury was “less significant” than initially feared, and Napier expects him to play again this season. The Gators could use him. They need to win two of their final three games to become bowl eligible.
