The problem is that the German language doesn’t know neutral pronouns and using the plural assumes that the other person is either royalty or that you aren’t friends.
Using it for people is also quite insulting but some enbys chose this as it’s more readable than sie*er or using “they” as a German word. Sadly there is no perfect solution right now.

Just fyi, I’ve never ever heard or read about this pronoun. Like they just made it up for the series. It felt *extremely* unnatural to me how they said it in the show.
The problem is that German simply does not have a gender neutral pronoun. There is no equivalent of they/them in this language. Just she, he and it.
