After upsetting the United States 2-1 on Thursday and beating Australia 2-0 on Sunday, Slovakia has made it to the final four of the Billie Jean King Cup taking place in Malaga, Spain. Slovakia made it to the semi-finals for the first time since 2013.
“For us, it’s always a big challenge to play those countries,” Viktória Hrunčáková said after her match against Australia’s Kimberly Birrell (7-5, 6-7(4), 6-3), as quoted by the official website. “We have nothing to lose. That’s why I think we enjoy it so much.”
Slovak Rebecca Šrámková confirmed her form, beating Ajla Tomljanovic 6-1, 6-2. According to the official website, she has been “one of the tour’s most in-form players recently and she’s now won 19 of her last 23 matches”, and adding that “it will take a brilliant performance to stop her”.
This was the first time Slovakia won over Australia, since they lost at all their previous encounters.
In addition to Šrámková and Hrunčáková, the Slovak team also includes Anna Karolína Schmiedlová, Renáta Jamrichová, and Tereza Mihalíková.
On Tuesday, November 19, Slovak tennis players will face-off against the Great Britain starting at 11:00 GMT and will follow a best of three match format. Great Britain will be hoping to get their first win over Slovakia, having lost their two previous meetings.
