Feasibility studies for the Greece-Saudi Arabia electrical interconnection, known as the Saudi Greek Interconnection, are currently underway and expected to be completed by the end of 2025, according to ADMIE CEO Manos Manousakis.
This project aims to link Europe with the Arabian Peninsula for the first time and is led by ADMIE, the company responsible for the operation and development of Greece’s national electrical grid.
“Our goal is to include this interconnection in the EU’s Projects of Common Interest (PCI),” said Manousakis. “It will allow both Europe and Saudi Arabia to harness large quantities of green energy produced in different geographical and climatic regions.” Manousakis also emphasized the significant commercial opportunities and geopolitical importance for Greece stemming from the Greece-Egypt interconnection (GREGY).
ADMIE has secured further agreements with companies in the Middle East, including the creation of a high-speed data corridor in the Eastern Mediterranean in partnership with Saudi company Dawiyat Integrated. Management is also in talks with Telecom Egypt to support the 2Africa cable system, which will connect Crete to one of the largest subsea cable projects in the world, enhancing internet connectivity across Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
