52 MPs voted in favour of the tax hike, 45 opposition MPs voted against.

The deadline for paying the vehicle exploitation tax has been changed to January 31 of the year following the calendar year. Previously, the tax could be paid at any time of your choice, but to pass the roadworthiness test, the tax must be paid.

The Law on Vehicle Exploitation Tax provides that the Road Safety Directorate will send a tax payment notice by January 10 of the following year to taxpayers who have not paid by the due date.

The notice will be sent to users registered in the e-services system, and can also be sent by post  to the declared place of residence or to the person’s official electronic address (if any).

The opposition United List called on the coalition to abandon this idea and cancel the plan to “brutally increase the tax by 10%”.Edgars Tavars, the representative of United List, called on the coalition to think about the consequences of this, as the tax will increase for everyone, not only for those living in the Riga agglomeration but also for car owners in Latgale and the southern part of the country, where the economic situation is far below the EU average.

The opposition National Alliance also supported the United List, while MP Jānis Vitenbergs commented on the 10% increase, saying that there is “a feeling that the coalition wants people not to drive cars at all”.
