The cost of 1mg of Iron for selected staple Iron/Protein sources in the UK.

I used Tesco website for the price/kg and Cronometer app for Iron per 100g.

People who don't eat meat or dairy are recommended to increase their Iron RDA by 1.8x to account for the reduced bioavailability of Non- Heme iron. So the costs of the plant sources have all been increased by 1.8x.

Clarification:

  • Kidney & Black Beans (Canned)
  • Lentils & Chickpeas (dried)

  1. Thats a nice graph!

Would be neat to also show the total amounts per 100g.
Adjusted for bioavailability, you would only need to eat approximately 172g of oats to get the same bioavailable iron as 100g of beef, I didn’t know that oats are that rich in iron!

  2. I just realised sirloin Steak is cut off. It ran to 74p
