Around 30 Ukrainian refugee families are accommodated in a building in the yard of the technical college in Saulaine, Bauska municipality. Next door, a former canteen stores donated goods for Ukrainians and for shipment to Ukraine.
“Here is a Ukrainian flag, you can see it – a torn sheet, on the sheet there was information about donations to Ukraine. Now we have moved all the charity goods away and it looks very unpleasant here because we also now have to understand what is what… There has been a robbery in this room. We have now, after a police check, tidied up the place a bit and so on,” said Gints Jankovskis, a volunteer and chairman of the association “Laiks jauniešiem”.
The most valuable parts, including hard drives, were stolen from 11 computers. “Which were also just thrown on the ground here. And they were all opened. As we can see, the wires have been completely removed. See how the wires were hanging.”
Boxes of stationery, furniture, and one of the drinks fridges were also taken
“Someone was probably preparing for Christmas and the artificial tree and decorations were also needed. This drawing on the wall was also drawn together with the theft,” Jankovskis said.
The charity warehouse has been open for three years and has been robbed once and had its windows smashed another time, but the perpetrators of both crimes have been caught. This time, it is not clear how the thieves got in, as the door has not been broken. No alarms were sounded and no suspicious activity was observed by nearby residents.
“This is absolutely… how low you have to sink for such a purpose.. It doesn’t really matter at the moment whether it’s for the currently sensitive purpose of supporting Ukraine or the people of Latvia. But if you can take from a charity warehouse, then something is wrong…” Jankovskis said.
