DR the Danish broadcaster has ruled out a return to Junior Eurovision in 2025 but welcomes changes to rules around participant wellbeing.

Denmark has confirmed that once again it will not be participating in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, the 2025 contest will be 20 years after Denmark last competed in the contest. The Director of DR Børn og Unge said in a statement to ESCPlus that:

Although we continually evaluate our participation in international projects , we have so far decided not to participate in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest . The decision is primarily due to our desire to focus on developing our own programmes and activities for children that are tailored to the everyday life and context of Danish children .

We recognise that the EBU has made important changes to the format and is highlighting the welfare of children in the competition, which is positive.

Marlene Boel went on to explain that DR continues to offer a unique platform for children in Denmark through MGP. MGP is an annual song contest for children in Denmark, from which the format for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest was developed. Ms Boel added:

MGP offers children the opportunity to express themselves musically in a safe and supportive environment, and we emphasize that the format fits well with our national culture and the values we want to promote in content aimed at children.

Denmark took part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest from 2003 to 2005, and hosted the first edition of the contest in the Danish capital Copenhagen. The country never finished outside of the top five. Their best result comes from their 2005 entry “Shake Shake Shake”, performed by Nicolai Kielstrup. He finished in 4th place with 121 points.
