Landspítali National Hospital has almost 440 million ISK outstanding due to unpaid bills from uninsured individuals who visited the hospital between 2021 and 2023. These people do not have health insurance in Iceland or the EEA.
The total claims against these parties amounted to over 1.8 billion ISK during this period, and about ISK 1,360 million have been collected.
When a claim is not paid, and interim collection is considered complete, claims of this nature are sent to an international law firm that acts as a collection agency for the hospital.
The Directorate of Labour pays the hospital costs of asylum seekers in Iceland, which amounted to over 713 million ISK during the same period.
